The 2nd-ranked Chadron High Girls continued to roll Friday as they dominated Gering 49-29 after a slow start, but the Gering Boys avenged the loss by taking a 56-55 thriller over the Cardinal boys.

The Chadron boys jumped out to a 16-8 lead after the 1st quarter, but the Bulldogs dominated the second quarter to lead 36-25 at the half.

Chadron responded to close to within 2 points to end the 3rd quarter, and led 50-46 to set up a back-and-forth final 4:00.

Gering scored 6 straight to go up 52-50, Chadron regained the lead 53-52 with :59 remaining, the Bulldogs grabbed the lead back at 54-53, but Chadron’s Von Sayeloune made 2-of-3 free throws with :29 left to put the Cardinals up 55-to-54.

The final heroics belonged to Gering, though, as sophomore Joses Palomo pulled up in the lane with :06 to go and hit a jumper to put the Bulldogs on top 56-55.

Chadron had one last chance, but an effort by Matt Lordino went awry and Gering held on for its 8th win of the year despite Chadron getting a double-double from Spencer Eliason of 25 points and 10 rebounds. The Cardinals are 5-8.

The girl’s game saw both teams struggle to score in the 1st quarter as Chadron led just 4-2, but the Lady Cardinals outscored Gering 21-9 in the 2nd period and never looked back.

No one from Gering reached double digits in scoring while Chadron had two…Peyton Hinn with 15 and Ashlea Kerr with 13. Chadron is now 13-1 while Gering falls to 7-7.

The Chadron boys and girls are at Gordon-Rushville on Tuesday.
