A young Hershey woman was killed early Monday morning in a 1-vehicle crash near Sutherland. Lincoln County Sheriff Jerome Kramer says Korey Huebner is believed to have been a passenger in a pickup that hit an embankment about 1:15 am and landed in a roadside ditch.
The 24-year-old Huebner was the cousin of Chadron State College football player Bryce Huebner.
Two others in the pickup…24-year-old Micah Koch and 28-year-old Jay Shotkoski…were taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center in North Platte. Sheriff Kramer has not said whether Koch or Shotkoski was the driver, but does says alcohol is believed to be involved. The crash investigation is continuing.
CASPER, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team had a huge win in playing from start to finish in topping Casper College 88-81 win during homecoming festivities at Casper College Saturday evening.
The Cougar men, who had a depleted bench because of illness and suited up just 10 players, received 28 points from Charles Ward and converted 24 of 36 second half free throws in picking up the 88-81 win.
WNCC coach Russ beck was pleased with the way his team played.
“It was a great win for the Cougars,” Beck said. “I am so proud of how they have responded and the roster changes we have had to deal with. We will keep working hard and get better every game. It is very hard to go into a place like Casper and win. We were without Cody Johnson and Youssoupha Kane because of sickness but we were a family tonight.
“We played through mistakes. We played through the refs fouling out five of our 10 players and we just simply found a way to win. All 10 of our Cougars stepped in and did their job. We need to keep working hard on our defense and keep getting better every day.”
The men’s win was historic especially after Casper defeated the Cougar men 86-74 back in November. WNCC took the lead midway through the first half and never trailed again. Casper held a 15-13 lead before Ward and Rich Williams drained back-to-back 3-pointers for a 19-15 lead. WNCC pushed the first half lead to as much as 13 points, 37-24 lead on a Trey Moore 3-pointer. WNCC led 41-31 at halftime.
The men opened up the second half with eight straight points to lead 49-31. Casper came clawing back, cutting the lead to 62-58. WNCC didn’t fade as they responded with a 7-0 run to go up 69-58. WNCC continued sizzling as Williams buried another 3-pointer to put the Cougars up 77-64 with four minutes to play.
Casper did cut the lead to five late at 82-77, but WNCC nailed clutch free throws down the stretch for the win.
Free throw shooting definitely played a part. WNCC was just 1 of 2 from the line in the first half and then attempted 36 second half free throws, canning 24. WNCC also shot 51 percent from the field while Casper shot around 31 percent.
Casper also didn’t connect on their free throws as they were 3 of 8 in the first half and 20 of 39 for the game.
Another big key for the Cougars was WNCC’s bench outscored Casper 37-14.
WNCC had four players in double figures, led by Ward with 28 points. Tahir Little pitched I 14 points with eight assists, while Williams had 13 points and four 3-pointers. Zach Clemens had had a good day, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds.
Also for the Cougars, Chad Calcaterra had five points and nine rebounds.
The Cougar men will return to action Tuesday when they travel to Sterling, Colo., to face Northeastern Junior College in a South Sub-Region contest.

Jordan Hooper scored 25 points and grabbed 7 rebounds to lead NU past #25 Michigan State
Lincoln – Jordan Hooper scored a game-high 25 points as Nebraska outlasted No. 25 Michigan State, 59-54, in a defensive struggle at the Bob Devaney Sports on Thursday night.
Nebraska notched its second straight Big Ten win to improve to 4-3 in the conference, while moving to 14-6 overall. It was the Huskers’ second win over a top-25 foe this season, joining a December victory over then-No. 24 Florida State.
Michigan State, which was led by a career-high 22 points from Kiona Johnson, slipped to 16-3 overall and 4-2 in the Big Ten. Johnson hit a career-high four three-pointers on the night, going 4-for-9 from long range. She entered the contest 2-of-23 on the year.
It was the Spartans’ first conference road loss. MSU’s only other league setback came to No. 8 Penn State in East Lansing.
Hooper, who hit 9-of-18 shots from the field, including 3-of-7 three-pointers, became the first opponent leading scorer on the season to get her season average against the stingy Spartan defense. MSU entered the contest surrendering just 47 points per game, while Hooper was averaging 17.8 points per game on the year.
Hooper led a dominant Nebraska inside game that outscored the Spartans 34-18 in the paint. Hooper added seven rebounds to help the Huskers outrebound Michigan State 39-38, after MSU entered the game with a plus-11.2 rebound margin in Big Ten play.
“I was really excited about the points in the paint numbers,” Nebraska Coach Connie Yori said. “The rebounding numbers were also really important for us tonight. It wasn’t pretty, and we didn’t think it was going to be, but that’s a big win for us because Michigan State is a really good basketball team, especially defensively.”
Nebraska also got the only six fastbreak points in the game, as the Husker defense did not allow any easy baskets. The stellar defensive effort by NU, which held the Spartans to just 32.2 percent (19-59) shooting, allowed the Huskers to overcome a 10-for-19 performance at the free throw line.
Senior point guard Lindsey Moore added 12 points and game highs with six assists and three steals. All eight Huskers who played in the game found the scoring column, including six points, five rebounds and three assists from sophomore forward Emily Cady. Hailie Sample added four points and six rebounds, while Tear’a Laudermill pitched in four points and two assists.
Reigning Big Ten Freshman of the Week Rachel Theriot managed just two points while hitting her only shot attempt, but the 6-0 guard matched Hooper with a game-high seven boards – all on the defensive end. She also dished out two assists.
Meghin Williams added three points and three big rebounds, while sophomore forward Katie Simon gave the Huskers a huge lift with three points and a defensive stop in just two trips up and down the court in one first-half minute.
Nebraska took a 30-23 lead into the locker room at halftime thanks to 50 percent (13-26) shooting for the Huskers. NU got to the rim time after time in the first half, and Hooper hit a pair long three-pointers over the outstretched arms of Spartan defenders. Hooper led the Huskers with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the opening period. Her second three of the half gave the Huskers a six-point lead with 48 seconds left and moved her into sole possession of second place on NU’s career three-point list ahead of Yvonne Turner with 184.
The Huskers closed the half on an 8-2 surge to take their biggest lead on Moore’s free throw with 16.7 seconds left. NU hit its last five shots from the floor in the half, while MSU closed the half by connecting on just two of its last 10 shots. Moore added five points and four assists in the first half.
Nebraska’s defense was solid in the first half, holding the Spartans to just 25.8 percent (8-31) shooting from the field, including 2-of-7 from long range. Johnson led MSU with 11 points, including a pair of three-pointers, after entering the game just 2-of-23 from long range. Jasmine Thomas added six first-half points for MSU, including the Spartans’ first four points of the game.
Hooper scored NU’s first five points of the second half to help the Huskers stay in control. The Spartans cut the lead to three points at 37-34 on a three-pointer by Courtney Schiffauer with 15:17 left. Schiffauer finished with 11 points on the night on 3-of-4 shooting and a 4-of-5 effort at the line.
But the Spartans could get no closer the rest of the way. Akyah Taylor hit a putback for MSU with 12:38 left to keep the NU margin at 43-39, but the Huskers held the Spartans without a field goal for the next nine minutes.
Moore scored a pair of layups as NU rebuilt its lead to seven at 47-40. Three free throws put the Husker margin at 50-41 with 4:57, before a Hooper layup with 3:56 finally gave Nebraska a double-digit lead at 52-41 with 3:56 left.
Nebraska maintained a 10-point lead at 58-48 with 1:15 left, before Michigan State got a couple of late layups from Thomas to cut the final margin to five. Thomas finished with 10 points.
The Huskers will take the weekend off before returning to Big Ten road action at Ohio State on Thursday, Jan. 31. Tip-off between the Huskers and Buckeyes is set for 7:30 p.m. (central) in Columbus, Ohio, with live national television coverage on the Big Ten Network.

CHADRON – Nine athletes have joined the Chadron State College football program at the start of the second semester and will participate in spring practice beginning in March, head coach Jay Long said.
Five of the newcomers were recruited to help replace four seniors who were among the five players who saw most of the action in the defensive line last fall, when the Eagles went 9-3 and were ranked No. 18 in the final American Football Coaches Association Division II poll.
”We graduated some great players in our defensive front and knew we needed some help there,” Long said. “That is our greatest need as we look forward to the 2013 season. We found some players that we think can help us right away.”
Long said the Eagles also have gained a couple of promising linebackers and are glad to have two western Nebraska natives join the team.
The latter two are Jonathan Houser, a speedster from Hay Springs, and Zach Smith, an all-around athlete from Gering. Houser is expected to be a running back or wide receiver and Smith will be a candidate for playing time in the defensive secondary.
Houser rushed 189 times for 1,297 yards and scored 21 touchdowns while playing at Creek Valley High School at Chappell as a junior in 2009. He played at Hay Springs his senior year, when he carried 65 times for 698 yards, an average of 10.7 yards, and participated in 70 tackles.
Houser also placed in the 100 meters at the State Track Meet and was a member of the district meet’s winning 400 and 1600-meter relay teams when he was a senior at Hay Springs in 2011.
Smith starred in football and basketball at Gering High School and also was an outstanding American Legion baseball player. As a senior in the fall of 2011, he caught 29 passes for 380 yards, participated in 45 tackles and led the Panhandle’s 11-man players with five interceptions.
He was enrolled at Western Nebraska Community College at Scottsbluff last fall.
Four of the defensive line recruits are from California community colleges.
They are Sean Acuna and Roy Duenas-Sanchez, both of whom played at East Los Angeles College the past two years; Brandon Blinn from Palomar Community College and Jon Barkley from Santa Monica College. All will be juniors this fall.
Acuna and Duenas-Sanchez helped East Los Angeles have back-to-back winning seasons. Acuna is 6-foot, 285 pounds and a native of Hacienda Heights, Calif., while Duenas-Sanchez is 6-1, 330 and is a Los Angeles native.
Blinn is 6-3, 245, is originally from Everett, Wash., and played in that state’s high school all-star game.
Barkley, who is 6-3, 265, was an all-conference selection at Santa Monica College when it won the conference championship in 2011.
The other defensive line candidate is Jake Weber, a 6-2, 255-pound graduate of Rapid City Central High School, where he was a three-time all-conference choice and earned all-state honors as a senior in 2011. He redshirted at Augustana University in Sioux Falls last fall and has four years of eligibility remaining.
One of the new linebackers, Benj Vigil of Akron, Colo., was a highly-regarded prospect on the Chadron State teams in 2009 and 2010, but left school before he got much playing time. He was selected by the Rocky Mountain News as Colorado’s Class A Player of the Year after helping Akron to a 13-0 season his senior year in 2008.
The other linebacker is Hank Strauss, a native of Aztec, N.M., who earned all-conference honors at Cabrillo College at Aptos, Calif., last fall.
