NEWSPAPER FORCES FOREST SERVICE TO RELEASE NAMES

The Chadron Record newspaper says the U-S Forest Service has given in to a Freedom of Information Act (FIOA) request and released the names of the 3 Chadron men facing federal charges for allegedly starting and failing to put out a fire on the Nebraska National Forest in October.

The Forest Service had announced the filing of charges shortly after the Spotted Tail Fire, but refused to identify the defendants. The newspaper responded with the FIOA request, which has led to the release of the names.

27-year old Jacob Marshall and 26-year old William Jones each face federal counts of using an explosive and leaving a fire without extinguishing it, while 26-year old Andrew Meister is charged only with leaving a fire without extinguishing it.

The Spotted Tail Fire burned 83 acres in the Nebraska National Forest between October 20th and 22nd while the Forest was still under Stage II fire restrictions. Those restrictions included a ban on the use of explosives.

Marshall, Jones, and Meister are accused of  using exploding targets during recreational shooting on the National Forest, with one of the targets starting the fire. The trio allegedly then fled the area without extinguishing the fire.

Each of the 5 charges carries a penalty of up to 6 months in jail and a $5,000 fine, but Marshall, Jones, and Meister could also be held responsible for the costs of fighting the fire.

The response to the Chadron Record’s FIOA request puts the initial estimate of fire suppression costs at $175,000…with the final cost still being determined.

$44-K APPROVED FOR CHADRON BETTERMENT PROJECTS

The Chadron City Council has approved more than $44,000 in grants from the LB-840 Community Improvement Fund to fully or partially pay for four projects.

10% of the revenue from the half-cent city’s economic development sales tax is set aside for community betterment projects, reviewed by a city committee and sent to the council for approval.

Few such projects have been approved in recent years, a situation that new City Manager Wayne Anderson blames on requirements adopted by the original review committee that limit grants to paying for work already done and call for a match from the group requesting the money.

Anderson has worked with the current LB-840 panel to ease those rules and drop the requirements for a match and for a project to be funded up-front by the organization doing it.

The largest grant approved this week is a little over $14,000 to the Chadron Parks Foundation for a drinking fountain at the Roger Eaton soccer field, borders around playground equipment, wood chips for the parks grounds, and 8 “doggie deposit” bag disposal stations in several city parks.

$12,246 goes to the Chadron Arts Center for an access ramp to the building. The Arts Center group has already raised another $5,000 for the project.

The Chadron Parks Department gets $10,658 for a new backstop at the Maurice Horse Legion Field, a project being done on behalf of the Chadron Youth Baseball organization. The pipes of the existing backstop are rusting out, while the new one will be built in sections that can be repaired or replaced separately.

The final grant is $7,500 to the Cemetery Kiosk Committee for a gazebo-like shelter to protect the year-old electronic gravesite information kiosk at the Greenwood Cemetery from the weather. An earlier grant from the improvement fund covered about half the cost of the kiosk itself.

Anderson is excited about the projects and hopes to see many others move forward with the loosened guidelines on matching funds and reimbursements.

Anderson says the improvement fund still has about $113,000 available for grants, with more coming in each year. The half-cent LB-840 sales tax expires in April 2014, but the city is expected to ask voters next year to renew the tax.

HUSKERS DOWN JACKSON STATE, 59-54

Lincoln – For Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles, tonight was night where the Huskers were more lucky than good, as Nebraska nearly saw a 15-point lead vanish down the stretch before holding on to a 59-55 victory over Jacksonville State Tuesday evening.

“Did you guys ever see that Buffalo Wild Wings commercial? If you haven’t, you just lived it. Christmas came early in the Devaney,” Miles said.  “First of all, we’re up, I think 13 at the under-eight timeout and I said, ‘Okay, here’s how you win the game: from the under-eight to the under-four, you extend the lead. You extend the lead. Just play your butt off, play defense, handle the ball well and be on the attack.’ Whatever their run was from there, we just did completely the opposite. It was so disappointing. We were fortunate. We just plain got lucky.”

Nebraska led 50-35 following a pair of Dylan Talley free throws at the seven minute mark, but 20-6 run by the Gamecocks pulled Jacksonville State (8-3) within 56-55 after Ronnie Boggs’ 3-pointer with 21 seconds left. On Nebraska’s next possession, Ray Gallegos split a pair of three throws with 18 seconds left, giving NU a two-point lead and the visitors an opportunity to tie.

JSU’s Brian Williams got into the lane, but his attempt missed and Dylan Talley pulled down the rebound. Talley, who finished with 10 points, then salted the game away by sinking a pair of free throws to preserve the win. Nebraska, which came into the contest hitting on 67 percent from the foul line, went 17-of-21 from the charity stripe to snap a two-game losing streak.

The Huskers (7-3) placed three players in double figures and received an outstanding performance from Shavon Shields, who led NU with 14 points. The 6-foot-6 freshman from Olathe, Kan., hit 6-of-7 shots from the field while setting career highs in rebounds and steals, as his offensive output in the first 30 minutes staked Nebraska a seemingly comfortable lead.

Brandon Ubel was the third Husker in double figures, as he totaled his third double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds, as Nebraska outscored JSU, 28-16 in the paint and held the Gamecocks to just 36 percent shooting on the floor.

It was a game of runs early, as the Huskers ran off seven straight points to take an early 11-6 lead after a Talley jumper, only to see Jacksonville State respond with a 14-2 run of its own to take a 20-13 lead after a Brian Williams basket

Nebraska then put the clamps down defensively, holding JSU to just one basket over the final 9:38 of the half to take control. Baskets by Ubel and Shields started a 16-2 Husker surge to close the half, as Nebraska ran off the final 12 points of the half, and made eight consecutive defensive stops to take a 29-22 lead into the locker room. NU held the visitors to just 30.8 percent shooting in the first half.

The Huskers started to go inside early in the second half, as Andre Almeida and Ubel keyed a 10-3 surge that put the Huskers up 41-29. From there, Shields took over, accounting for the Huskers’ next seven points, as NU pushed the lead to 15 before Jacksonville State rallied down the stretch

Darion Rackey led four Jacksonville State with 17 points, as the Gamecocks saw their five-game win streak snapped.

The Huskers will travel to El Paso this weekend for a two-day tournament on Saturday and Sunday. NU will face Central Michigan Saturday night at 6 p.m. CT. The games will not be televised and only available on the Husker Sports Radio Network.

GAME AND PARKS DEER MEETING TUES 12/18 AT CSC

Nebraska Game and Parks brings its statewide series of public input meetings on deer problems in the state to Chadron State College with a session Tuesday night at 7:00 in the Student Center.

Wildlife manager Todd Nordeen of the Game and Parks district office in Alliance says agency biologists will explain and take questions on a number of topics including deer management, deer damage and depredation permits, antlerless harvest, trophy management and diseases.

Nordeen says the annual meetings have grown to fill an important part of the deer management process for Nebraska Game and Parks, bringing in new information and insights from the public.

Five of this year’s 7 meetings have already been held….McCook, Norfolk, Kearney, O’Neill, Gretna, and York. The only left after tonight’s 7:00 session at Chadron State College will be Thursday night in Bridgeport at the Prairie Winds Community Center, also at 7 p.m.

ARCHITECT PICKED FOR CHADRON POOL PROJECT

The committee working on a proposal to convert Chadron’s outdoor swimming pool into an indoor pool has picked an architect to design the project and work with supporters on bond issue to help fund it.

City manager and committee member Wayne Anderson says Dave Burbach and Burbach Aquatics of Platteville, Wisconsin, stood out among the  5 firms asked to submit their credentials and the 3 brought in for interviews.

Anderson says the pool committee…made up of community supporters, city officials, and Chadron State College vice president Dale Grant…liked the fact that Burbach has some 600 swimming pools to his credit and is working with another Panhandle town…Oshkosh…on a pool right now.

The committee also liked the fact that Burbach had come to Chadron early and was already familiar with the background of the situation when he addressed it. Anderson says Burbach has the drive and confidence needed for the project to be successful.

Chadron’s only public indoor pool has been in the Armstrong Building at Chadron State, but age and mechanical problems led the school to eliminate it as part of the multi-million dollar renovation and expansion of the gymnasium complex.

Pool supporters and college leaders came up with the idea of enclosing the city-owned outdoor pool as a joint project that would have the college also handle day-to-day operations of the resulting indoor pool.

Anderson says Burbach Aquatics should have a firm proposal for the project in 6-to-8 weeks, then will help supporters to put together a funding campaign. The cost of all of that to the city and the pool committee? Nothing, if voters don’t approve the project.

Anderson says there appears to be good support in the Chadron community for the pool conversion idea, or at least he hasn’t heard opposition yet.

CASEY BERAN ELECTED TO RMAC HALL OF FAME

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Former Chadron State College All-American football player Casey Beran has been selected as the third Eagle player to enter the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Beran, who played for the Eagles from 1995 to 1999, was the first CSC player to earn both All-American and Academic All-American honors. He’ll be inducted into the RMAC Hall during ceremonies July 12th in Colorado Springs.

A native of Sargent who played 8-man football in high school, Beran was a 3-time RMAC First-Team pick and the league’s 1999 Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the RMAC All-Century team in 2009 as one of the top 12 defensive players in RMAC history.

Now an orthopedic surgeon for Alegent Creighton Clinic in Omaha, Beran says that while he was “really excited” to learn of his selection to the RMAC Hall of Fame, he sees the honor as a tribute to how good the Eagles and coaches were when he played.

He says it isn’t an individual honor to him “because it makes me think of all l the great players I played with. They made what I did possible.”

Beran…whose younger brother Cory ended his own CSC career a year ago with RMAC and All-American honors himself…was part of the first 3 Eagles teams to win or share the RMAC title and the first two that reached the NCAA D-II playoffs.

As a senior, he was named a Football Gazette and USA Football First Team All-American and a Second-Team choice for the Daktronics and Associated Press Little All-American teams. He owned the CSC career record for most sacks when he graduated at 36.5, and also had 38 quarterback hurries and caused 7 fumbles.

Head coach Brad Smith…himself a member of the RMAC Hall since 2011 and the league’s Century coach…also put Beran to use on offense as a fullback and he scored 7 touchdowns as a junior and 4 as a senior.

Beran majored in human biology and graduated Magna Cum Laude in the spring of 1999, the same year he was Chadron State’s male RMAC scholar-athlete. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he graduated in 2004 and began his medical residency.

The other Chadron State athletes in the RMAC Hall of Fame are tight end Joe Planansky…the first Eagle to enter in 2005…and linebacker Kevin Homer…inducted in 2007.

The only other football player entering the RMAC Hall in 2013 is Colorado Mines quarterback Chad Friehauf…winner of the 2004 Harlan Hill Trophy as the best player in NCAA D-II and another member of the RMAC All-Century team.

Entering from Adams State is track star Brenda Jarvis-Eriksson…a three-time NAIA National Champion and 16-time All-American as a middle distance runner and hurdler between 1983 and 86.

Crystal Krebs is the first softball player and first  UC-Colorado Springs athlete to make the Hall. A 2-time All-American, 2-time RMAC  Player of the Year, and NCAA Division II Catcher of the Year in 2004, Krebs set a new NCAA Division II home run record with 25 in 48 games in 2005.

Metro State’s Mark Worthington was the NCAA D-II Player of the Year as a senior in 2005 and helped lead the Roadrunners to the national title as a part-time starter as a freshman. He played for his native Australia in the Beijing and London Olympics, and is currently playing professionally in Serbia.

Two former Adams State coaches are part of the Class of 2013. Frank Powell began the school’s wrestling program in 1961 while still an undergraduate and coached the team for 9 years…highlighted by back-to-back NAIA national titles in 1968 and 1969, teams that are already in the RMAC Hall.

Richard Ulrich followed Powell as the Adams State wrestling coach and led the program to the RMAC title all 9 of his years there and to a trio of NAIA national titles.

Rounding out the 2013 RMAC Hall honorees are three Adams State national championship teams: the 1990 wrestling team, which claimed the school’s 8th title in the sport, and the 1990 and 1992 men’s indoor track teams, the first RMAC teams to win NAIA titles in that sport.

The 11th annual RMAC Hall of Fame ceremony will be Friday, July 12 at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6. A table of 10 can be purchased for $500. Individual reservations are $55 prior to July 5.

NEW NCAP DIRECTOR STARTS WORK

Antonio “Hank” Martin

The Northwest Community Action Partnership board ended up moving more quickly than expected and has hired Antonio “Hank” Martin as the agency’s new executive director. In fact, board chairman and Sheridan County Commission Jim Krotz says Martin’s first day on the job was Monday.

Martin succeeds Lorye McLeod, who left the agency this summer after nearly 6 years as executive director. He’s no stranger to northwest Nebraska. He’s a Criminal Justice and Psychology graduate of Chadron State College, and served in the local National Guard unit.

Krotz says Community Action had an excellent pool of candidates, but the board liked Martin’s experience. He’s worked in Colorado with grant-funded programs, state agencies and private industry to provide a variety of client services.

They also liked his energy and warmth. Krotz calls him “an extremely engaging and warm personality with excellent community relations skills,” the “kind of guy who can help build partnerships with other community agencies and organizations.”

Northwest Community Action Partnership is a private, non-profit grant-funded umbrella organization for a variety of state and federal programs serving low-income clients in Dawes, Sioux, Sheridan, Box Butte, and Cherry counties. Its mission is to help low-income families and individuals improve the quality of their lives and attain self-sufficiency.
