POLICE ARREST SUSPECT IN DEADLY SHOOTING IN OMAHA

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Omaha police have made another arrest in the shooting death of an Omaha teenager.

Police say Friday that 20-year-old Angelo Tolbert was taken into custody for first-degree murder, first-degree assault and two counts of use of a weapon to commit a felony.

Tolbert is one of five men now in custody in the shooting death of 16-year-old Montrell Wiseman last Sunday on the city’s northeast side. A 16-year-old girl was wounded in the shooting.

Earlier Friday, a Douglas County judge set bond at $2 million for 38-year-old Francis Cayou. He’s charged with conspiracy to commit a felony in Wiseman’s death.

Police on Friday also say officers arrested 21-year-old Nikole Gamble on an accessory charge in the case.

SD PIPE-MAKING PLANT TO SUPPLY ND OIL INDUSTRY

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A Texas-based pipe maker has started construction on a manufacturing plant in Rapid City.

WL Plastics Director Mike Dahl says the South Dakota plant will help supply North Dakota’s oil industry. The plant will employ about 40 people.

WL Plastics also has facilities in Texas, Kentucky, Utah, Wyoming and the Canadian province of Alberta, Canada.

PARALYZED FORMER HUSKER GETS BARRIER-FREE HOME

Budge PorterOMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A former University of Nebraska football player who was paralyzed has moved into a new, barrier-free home with his family.

Budge Porter was paralyzed after suffering a neck injury during spring practice in 1976. He’s worked as a stockbroker but had to quit as his health declined. He and his family have been living in an apartment.

Some friends launched what they called the Budge Porter Project to build the home in Omaha. One donated the land. Another helped secure a loan. Another designed and built the ranch-style home. Subcontractors and suppliers discounted their bills.

Porter and his three children moved in on Thursday.

The home is open for $5 public tours this weekend. The money will go to the foundation to help others acquire barrier-free homes.

SD MAN ACCUSED OF TRYING TO BURN DOWN HOME

BOX ELDER, S.D. (AP) — A Box Elder man is accused of trying to burn down his mobile home while his live-in girlfriend and another man were inside.

Twenty-nine-year-old Joseph Hodges is charged with arson and reckless burning — charges that could land him in prison for 35 years if he’s convicted.

It was not immediately clear if he had obtained a lawyer.

Authorities say the two people inside the home when it went up in flames about 5 a.m. Thursday were able to get out safely.

SCHOOL OF MINES CUTS RIBBON ON DOWNTOWN BUILDING

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is cutting the ribbon Friday on its new downtown campus building in Rapid City.

The 18,000-square-foot building is housing the university’s industrial engineering department and a four-room conference center for community use.

Guests attending the 10:30 a.m. grand opening ceremony will be offered facility tours and refreshments following speeches by school and community officials.

The industrial engineering program and its nearly 150 students have operated out of the top two floors of the building for the past year while renovations continued on the main floor and basement.

The university is expanding into downtown is two-fold to connect with Rapid City’s economic development plans and expand its campus to accommodate growth.

MAN ARRESTD AFTER STANDOFF IN SIOUX FALLS

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Police in Sioux Falls say they arrested a 38-year-old man after he threw a Molotov cocktail at a SWAT rescue vehicle during an hours-long standoff at his house.

The device did not ignite.

Officers responded to the home around 12:50 a.m. Friday after receiving a call about a possible suicidal person.

Police say that after the cocktail was thrown, SWAT team members shot in pepper spray and Johnny Jay Thomas came out around 9:15 a.m.

Police say Thomas during the standoff also pointed a rifle at SWAT officers several times. Officers later found a one-pot meth lab in the house.

Thomas was charged with aggravated assault on law enforcement, manufacture of a controlled substance and other charges.

Attorney information was not immediately available.

MCGOVERN CELEBRATED AS ‘CONSCIENCE OF OUR NATION’

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A bagpipe processional closed out the funeral service for former U.S. Sen. George McGovern, who was remembered by hundreds of mourners during the two-hour ceremony.

McGovern died Sunday at age 90. He was recalled fondly Friday in speeches by former U.S. Sens. Tom Daschle and Gary Hart.

Hart called McGovern “a voice of conscience for our nation in our time.”

Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern, who is not related to George McGovern, also spoke about the love McGovern had for his country.

The funeral for the three-time presidential candidate brought out politicians from both sides of the aisle.

Friday’s service capped two days of remembrances for the South Dakota native. Vice President Joe Biden spoke at a Thursday prayer service.

McGovern will be buried in a private ceremony in Washington.

MCGOVERN SERVICE ENDS WITH CLAPPING, SINGING

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A prayer service to honor former U.S. Sen. and three-time presidential candidate George McGovern ended with mourners clapping and singing along to a popular folk song by Woody Guthrie.

Hundreds of people stood up from their pews and sang along as the band East of Westreville (WEST-uhr-ville) performed “This Land Is Your Land” during a prayer service for McGovern, who died at age 90 on Sunday in Sioux Falls.

Mourners simultaneously wept while clapping and singing along to the five-member band. The band was a favorite of McGovern’s.

McGovern’s funeral is to begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Washington Pavilion.

KANSAS MAN TO FACE TRIAL IN FATAL LEXINGTON CRASH

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) – A Kansas man accused of being drunk and causing a fatal crash will stand trial in Nebraska.

North Platte television station KNOP-TV reports (http://bit.ly/RwA4GL) that 22-year-old Destry Swartz of Coats, Kan., waived his preliminary hearing on Monday, and his case was bound over to Dawson County District Court.

Swartz is charged with motor vehicular homicide, fleeing to avoid arrest and driving while drunk. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Swartz was speeding away from a state trooper in Lexington on Oct. 9 when he ran a red light and slammed into a pickup driven by 68-year-old Ruben Maravilla-Cortes, of Lexington. Maravilla-Cortes died at the scene.

NORTHEAST NEBRASKA MAN GETS 18 MONTHS FOR STOMPING ON TEEN GIRL

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A 43-year-old northeast Nebraska man has been given 18 months in prison for stomping on the head of a teenage girl.

A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg (gihlj) says Charles Phillips Jr., of Macy, was convicted of assault on a child resulting in substantial bodily injuries.

Phillips must serve three years of supervised release after he leaves federal custody and must pay restitution of nearly $1,200.

Gilg’s office says Phillips got into an argument with his girlfriend on April 2 last year. When the girlfriend’s 13-year-old daughter yelled at Phillips to leave her mother alone, Phillips cursed the girl and stomped on her head.
