WHO WON “SURVIVOR: PHILIPPINES”?

 

 

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Sex therapist Denise Stapley is the $1 million winner on “Survivor: Philippines.” She convinced her tribemates that she had out-played, outwitted and outlasted them all by surviving every Tribal Council vote. The final tally wasn’t even close. Former teen TV star Lisa Whelchel and Michael Skupin only got a single vote each. Malcolm Freberg, who made it to the final four, washed out in the last Immunity Challenge and was voted out. Denise says the million bucks will go far when she gets home to Iowa.

“HOBBIT” OPENS HUGE AT THE BOX OFFICE

LOS ANGELES (AP) – It’s a huge opening for “The Hobbit.” “The Hobbit” has the biggest December ever. It brings in nearly $85 million — that’s a better start than any of the three “Lord of Rings” movies. Hollywood is also on track for a record breaking year — topping 2009. The animated “Rise of the Guardians” is a distant second this weekend. “Lincoln” was third for the weekend and it has also crossed the $100 million mark. The James Bond movie “Skyfall” was fourth and is closing in on $1 billion worldwide.

ADELE, CARLY RAE JEPSEN TOP iTUNES 2012 LIST

NEW YORK (AP) — It seemed that 2011 was the Year of Adele, but 2012 was pretty good for her too. iTunes says Adele’s “21” album was the top-selling album in the past year. It also was the best-selling album on iTunes last year.

Taylor Swift’s “Red” was second in 2012, followed by Mumford and Sons with “Babel” (BAY’-bel), One Direction’s “Up All Night” and fun.’s “Some Nights.” Carly Rae Jepsen had the top-selling song on iTunes with “Call Me Maybe.”

Gotye  was second with “Somebody That I Used To Know.” ”We Are Young” by fun. was third, followed by Maroon 5’s “Payphone” and “Starships” by Nicki Minaj.

JUSTIN BIEBER: TARGET OF MURDER PLOT

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico (AP) — An inmate in a New Mexico prison has revealed to investigators he launched a plot to kill Justin Bieber. Dana Martin told authorities he persuaded a man he met in prison and the man’s nephew to kill Bieber and Bieber’s bodyguard.

The plot included castrating and killing two people not connected to the singer. No one has been hurt. Martin is serving two life sentences for the killing of a 15-year-old girl in 2000. He was angry at Bieber for not responding to his letters.

Investigators say Mark Staake and Tanner D. Ruane were in on the plot and on their way to a Bieber concert in New York when they took a wrong turn, crossed into Canada and Staake was arrested on an outstanding warrant. Ruane was arrested later.

TIM McGRAW DISCUSSES NEXT PROJECT

NASHVILLE (AP) — Tim McGraw describes his upcoming album as a combination of discovery and rediscovery. McGraw says his “Two Lanes Of Freedom” album will blend the new sounds he tried on his last album while also going back to his roots.

Taylor Swift and Keith Urban are guest musicians. “Two Lanes Of Freedom” comes out February 5.

SHORT, MCCARTNEY HOST A “FUNNY AND EMOTIONAL” SNL CHRISTMAS SHOW THIS WEEKEND

NEW YORK (AP) – Tomorrow is “Saturday Night Live’s” Christmas show and Lorne Michaels hopes it’ll be emotional as well as funny. Michaels says the Christmas show “has to have an emotional component.” He says it also has to be good enough to keep people talking while SNL goes on hiatus until next year. It’ll be up to Martin Short and his musical guest Paul McCartney to give Michaels what he wants.

ADELE NAMED BILLBOARD’S TOP ARTIST OF 2012

NEW YORK (AP) – It’s another year and another Adele domination on the music charts: The British singer is Billboard’s top artist of 2012.

 Billboard said Friday that Adele is the year’s biggest artist and her diamond “21” album, released in February 2011, is this year’s top album. Adele earned both prizes last year.

 The year’s top three songs are Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” and fun.’s “We Are Young,” respectively.

 Adele is also the top female artist. Drake is the top male artist, One Direction is the top new artist and Maroon 5 is the year’s top group.

 Billboard said Drake, Taylor Swift, fun. and Don Omar are the top acts in the R&B/hip-hop, country, rock and Latin fields, respectively.

L.A. TO X: “TTYL”

LOS ANGELES (AP) – L.A. Reid will soon be an “EX” Factor judge — that’s ex as in former judge. Reid is leaving “The X Factor.” He and Simon Cowell are the only original judges to make it through both seasons. But Reid won’t be back for season-three. Reid and Cowell mix it up on the show. But Reid tells “Access Hollywood” he and Cowell have great relationship and are friends. Reid says he has to get back to his day job of running Epic Records.

BIEBER AND OTHERS ADDED TO NEW YEAR’S ROCKIN’ EVE

 

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Justin Bieber has been added to the performers in Los Angeles for ABC’s “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” and Psy has been added to the New York lineup.

Jason Aldean, Greyson Chance, Ellie Goulding and The Wanted will also perform in Los Angeles.

The stars will sing 15 number-one hits that night.
