COMMISSIONERS TAKING OATHS OF OFFICE

The first Thursday of January is traditionally the day Nebraska county officials elected in November take the oath of office, but it’s not actually set in statute.

The Panhandle this year took full advantage of the flexibility allowed with at least one county conducting its swearing-in Wednesday and at least one doing it Friday.

Getting the jump on things Wednesday was Sioux County, which used an already-scheduled meeting of the board of commissioners to administer the oath to Commissioner Josh Skavdahl…the only county official elected last year.

Coming in later on Friday will be Dawes County, scheduling the oath for Commissioner Webb Johnson’s second term to coincide with another previously-scheduled board meeting. Public Defender Paul Wess, reelected to a third term, is tentatively slated to take the oath tomorrow afternoon.

Box Butte, Scotts Bluff and Sheridan counties all administered the oath Thursday morning. For Box Butte County, it was a new face joining the board of commissioners…Republican Doug Hashman of Berea, who defeated former commissioner Marv Toedli.

In Sheridan County, the only newly-elected official was county commissioner Dan Kling, while Scotts Bluff County had two commissioners take the oath….Ken Meyer and Steve Stratton. Meyer, Stratton, and Kling are all starting their third 4-year terms as county commissioners.

BOX BUTTE GENERAL EXPANDS PUBLIC WIFI

Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) recently expanded its public Wi-Fi coverage to better serve the needs of visiting patients, family and friends.

Several months ago, the IT department realized the increasing need to offer public Internet for our customers,” said Tony Hindman, IT Department staff member. “We’ve all been in the situation of caring for or visiting friends and family in a hospital or clinic setting, only to find that there is no Internet available for updating CaringBridge or Facebook statuses.  At BBGH, we have addressed that need by providing wireless guest internet using a system similar to those found in hotels.”

This wireless connection, named “Public Internet”, is on a completely separate Internet connection from the main hospital network, ensuring security for BBGH systems while allowing unfiltered Internet access for hospital guests and vendors.

We currently have Public Internet available in the Patient Care Unit, ER, OB/OR Waiting Area, Radiology, and Medical Arts Plaza,” Mr. Hindman concluded. “We will continue to evaluate our signal coverage and will add or reposition access points in the facility to improve service.”

TRIALS SCHEDULED FOR ALLIANCE RESIDENTS FACING METH CHARGES

Two Alliance residents will stand trial for allegedly possessing methamphetamine in a home that also occupied children.

In Box Butte County District Court Wednesday morning, trial was set for 42-year-old Brian Chesson and 35-year-old Kelly Clark.

The trials will be held on separate days, with Chesson’s scheduled for February 15, and Clark’s to be held February 25.

The possession of meth charges are felonies while the child abuse charges are misdemeanors.

Clark and Chesson were arrested on September 11 after Alliance police received a report that Clark had been using marijuana in front of Clark’s children, all of whom were under the age of 13.   A search of the home resulted in the felony drug and misdemeanor child abuse charges being filed.

Both parties are free on bond.

FELONY ARSON CHARGES FILED AGAINST ALLIANCE MAN

An Alliance man has been charged with one count of felony arson for allegedly setting fire to his home last month.

The Alliance Times-Herald reports that 40-year-old Isaac Gonzalez is accused of setting fire to the house at 1107 Grand Avenue that he rented from Barry Harris of Alliance.  The fire was reported around 3:15 on the morning of December 13.

The interior of the house was destroyed.   The home was valued at just over $58,000.

Court documents state that Alliance police were twice contacted to conduct a welfare check on Gonzalez, who was allegedly sending text messages to a woman that were suicidal in nature.

Police spotted the fire at Gonzalez’ residence and contacted the fire department. Police pulled Gonzalez from a basement window. He was taken to Box Butte General Hospital and then transported to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.

An arrest warrant has been issued for Gonzalez and bond has been set at $150,000.

SEIFKE TRIAL SET FOR MARCH 5-7

A Hemingford woman accused of being an accessory in the death of former Alliance resident Josh Bullock will stand trial in early March.

Box Butte County District Court Judge Travis O’Gorman set aside three days for the trial of 20-year-old Rose Seifke.

During a pre-trial court hearing Wednesday morning, the attorneys in the case, Larry Miller and Kathleen Hutchinson, agreed to hold the trial March 5, 6, 7.

Bullock’s body was found south of Chadron last summer. 27-year-old Andy Gonzalez of Alliance told law enforcement during a June 12 standoff in downtown Alliance that he had killed Bullock in Alliance in December of 2011, and then transported his body to Dawes County and buried it in the Pine Ridge forest south of Chadron.

Seifke allegedly assisted Gonzalez by traveling with him to the area where Gonzalez burned a pickup truck with Bullock’s body inside. Two days later the couple allegedly returned to the burned truck and Gonzalez buried Bullock’s remains in a different location.

Seifke remains free of bond.

CRASH CLOSES HWY 20 NEAR HARRISON FOR AN HOUR NEW YEAR’S NIGHT

Highway 20 about 8 miles east of Harrison was closed for around an hour New Year’s evening by a 2-vehicle accident that sent two people to different hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.

The Nebraska State Patrol says 33-year old Robert Fox of Texas was eastbound in a pickup about 7:20 pm when he crossed the center line of Highway 20 and struck a westbound SUV driven by 19-year old Kaitelyn Woodrum of Harrison nearly head-on.

The patrol says the pickup went into the north ditch, then on into a field while the SUV remained on the pavement.  The highway was closed about an hour by the investigation and cleanup.

Fox, who was not using his seat belt, was taken to Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff. Woodrum was using her seat belt and was taken to Chadron Community Hospital. A passenger with Woodrum, who was also wearing a seat belt, refused treatment at the scene.

NEW YEAR’S EVE PROTEST, CHECKPOINT ALL BUT SHUT DOWN WHITECLAY

Anti-alcohol activists are pleased with a New Year’s Eve protest of beer sales in Whiteclay, as 3 of the 4 stores with beer licenses closed early despite only 15 individuals taking part in the protest.

Spokesman Olowan Martinez says the stores are normally open until midnight, but that advance word of the protest and the Oglala Sioux tribal police setting up an alcohol checkpoint just across the state line, 2 had already shut their doors when protesters arrived at 9 p.m., and a third closed around 10 p.m.

Martinez…who lives on the reservation in Porcupine…says protesters marched through Whiteclay 3 times while local law enforcement from Nebraska keeping watch in town and tribal police just across the stateline and reservation border.

Another protester from the reservation…Autumn Two Bulls of Oglala…says Whiteclay was unusually quiet when the small group arrived…describing it as being “like a ghost town.” Two Bulls says she liked seeing that, and seeing only a handful of customers going into State Line Liquor…the store that did stay open till midnight.

Olowan Martinez says the protesters were very grateful to the tribal police for their cooperation on New Year’s Eve, explaining that once people the officers were working with them, “the energy was good (and) things went really well.”

She estimates that fewer than 50 cars went through Whiteclay on New Year’s Eve, with officers at the checkpoint searching everyone who was coming back through to the reservation.

Whiteclay has only about a dozen residents, but the 4 stores with beer licenses sold the equivalent of 4.3 million 12-ounce cans of beer last year. Critics blame them for most of the alcoholism and bootlegging problems on the reservation….which is officially dry.
