CSC VB PLAYS TOUGH BUT STILL SWEPT BY #16 COLO MINES

Box Score
CHADRON – Five Colorado School of Mines attackers had at least six kills as the No. 16-ranked Orediggers swept Chadron State 25-19, 25-21, 25-19 in a tightly played Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match Saturday in Chadron.

Colorado Mines’ offense was balanced throughout the match, which featured 15 ties and 10 lead changes.

The Orediggers, now 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the conference, hit .186 as a team, while limiting the Eagles to .095.

Melanie Wannamaker paced Mines with a match-high 13 kills. Sarah Pekarek and Holly Hutchison each had eight, Jackie Stabell finished with seven and Laura Beckmann had six.

Chadron State, which falls to 3-12 overall and 1-5 in the RMAC, played the highly ranked Orediggers well but couldn’t put them away. The Eagles owned leads in each set, including a 6-point advantage in the third, but Mines’ service game – the Orediggers finished with five aces – proved to be the deciding factor.

Erika Roybal and Mallory Irvine had seven kills apiece to pace CSC and Mollie Jones added five kills and seven digs.

Both of Chadron State’s setters finished with double digit assists. Justine Ackie had 17, while Alyssa Bauer provided 10.

Kristina Harter had a match-high 20 digs.

“First of all it is a great honor to even compete in this golf tournament, as you have to quaify during the season by shooting a score lower than 100,” said AHS coach Nate Lanik.

“Danielle and Ashtyn did that for the entire season so hats off to them.”

“To separate the field the course was set up to challenge the girls, and you can tell that happened by the scores that were turned in by these girls. They moved the tees back and made the course longer and then there were some tricky pin placements.”

“Now it is time to correct the minor mistakes and prepare for Districts on Monday in Holdrege. This will be one of the toughest tournaments of the year with very good competition, with a majority of the kids that place in our District tournament going on and placing at the State meet. We will have to be at the top of our game when we take the course on Monday.”
