WNCC MEN FALL AT TRINIDAD STATE

WNCC_Cougar _ 250 Pixels              TRINIDAD, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team couldn’t find an answer to a red-hot shooting Trinidad State Junior College team that shot 58 percent from the field on their way to a 93-72 South Sub-Region win over the Cougars Saturday afternoon.

“They ]Trinidad] came out ready to play and they shot 50 percent from the field even as much defense that we threw at them,” WNCC coach Russ Beck said. “We ran into them when they were playing for something [after losing last night].”

Shooting was definitely a big key in the contest. Trinidad shot 58 percent from the field and buried nine 3-pointers. Devonte Malcolm had the hot hand from beyond the arc, burying seven treys.

WNCC, on the other hand, shot 47 percent from the floor and made 6 of 19 3-pointers. Rich Williams led the team with three treys.

Beck said a big key was how Trinidad played as a team, dishing out 28 assists and committing only 12 turnovers. WNCC turned the ball over just 12 points as well.

WHCC had had two players in double figures. Ward tossed in 24 points followed by Quante Cooley with 12 points. Williams followed with nine points while Tahir Sebastian Suarez had eight points.

Malcolm led Trinidad with 27 points followed by Tre’von Wilkerson with 19 points.

WNCC will be back in action next week with three sub-region contests. The Cougars travel to McCook on Tuesday and Eastern Wyoming on Thursday before returning home for a Friday afternoon game against North Platte Community College at 4 p.m.

CSC VAULTERS SOAR AT BHSU MEET

SPEARFISH, S.D. – Both of Chadron State College’s leading male pole vaulters showed outstanding consistency while clearing 15-feet, 5-inches on Saturday at the Black Hills State Rock and Jock Open Meet in Spearfish and barely missed going over 16-1.

Coach Ryan Baily said both Skyler Hoopes and Kolten Jelden easily made 15-5, a height no Chadron State vaulter had reached indoors until both of them did it early this season.

Hoopes went 15-5 to set the CSC record at the first meet of the season and Jelden topped 15-7 about a month later after transferring to Chadron State.

“Both of them were really close to making 16-1,” Baily said. “That’s the height we expect they’ll have to make to go to nationals. Hopefully, they can do it next weekend when we go back to Black Hills for the conference meet.”

Hoopes won the vault Saturday because he cleared 15-5 on his first attempt while Jelden made it on his second attempt to finish second.

Nearly all the Eagles who entered Saturday’s meet were throwers and vaulters.

Sophomore Josey Pehringer won the women’s vault at 10-11 ¾.

Freshman Mel Herl won the women’s shot put at 44-2 ¾, edging teammate Alyssa Norton by two inches for first place. Cyndi Thomas was third for the Eagles at 43-3 ¾.

Norton won the women’s weight throw at 54-8 ¼, the second best mark of her career. Herl was third at 49-3 ¾.

In the men’s shot put, the Eagles’ Charith Kapukotuwa was third at 52-6, about 18 inches below his career best.

Four young CSC throwers finished right behind Kapukotuwa, led by redshirt freshman Daniel Sotelo at 51-0 and sophomore Kyle McCarthy at 50-5 ¼.  Both of their marks were at least 20 inches farther than their previous bests.

HUSKERS FALL TO #8 MICHIGAN STATE

Shavon Shields
Shavon Shields

Lincoln – Despite strong performances from Shavon Shields and Dylan Talley, the Nebraska basketball team was unable to topple No. 8 Michigan State, falling to the Spartans, 73-64, Saturday evening at the Devaney Center.

Shields posted his first career double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing a career-high 13 rebounds, while Talley scored a game-high 28 points, but Michigan State’s balance was too much on this evening.

Four Spartans reached double figures, including double-doubles by both Adreian Payne (15 points, 14 rebounds) and Derrick Nix (13 points, 11 rebounds).

MSU, which improved to 22-4 and 11-2 in the Big Ten, held Nebraska to just 35.5 percent shooting and out-rebounded Nebraska, 42-24.  Keith Appling led MSU with 13 points and four assists while Gary Harris added 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting, while Payne keyed the decisive second-half run to break open a one-point game.

Nebraska (12-14, 3-10 Big Ten) trailed 29-24 at the break, but rallied behind Shields, who scored 12 of the Huskers first 16 second-half points to cut the lead to 41-40 with 14:17 left. Payne, who had just two points in the first half, scored six of his 15 points in a 16-4 Spartan run to put Michigan State up 57-44 with 6:25 left.

The Huskers were down 65-51 with 1:34 left, but Talley and Shields led Nebraska on a 10-3 surge to pull within 68-61 with 57 seconds left. MSU held the Huskers off at the foul line, going 18-of-24 from the line in the final 20 minutes, while NU got to the line just 13 times on the night.

Shields became the first Husker freshman since Aleks Maric in 2005 to record a double-double, while Talley’s 28 points topped his previous career best of 27 set against Kent State on Nov. 24. The senior went 8-of-16 from the floor, including four 3-pointers. The Huskers were just 8-of-24 from 3-point range, as MSU held Ray Gallegos without a 3-pointer. Gallegos entered the night leading the Big Ten with 2.5 3-pointers per game.

In the first half, MSU used a 13-3 run to take control, building its largest lead of the half at 23-12 after a Gary Harris steal and dunk forced NU to take a timeout. Nebraska fought right back with a 7-0 run, including 3-pointers from Brandon Ubel and Talley to cut the lead to four. Nebraska, which shot just 32 percent in the first half and was out-rebounded 24-10, forced 10 Spartan turnovers in the first half and that led to 12 Husker points.

Nebraska returns to action Thursday night, as the Huskers host the Iowa Hawkeyes. Tickets are available for the matchup by calling 800-8-BIGRED or by visiting Huskers.com.

CSC MEN WIN SECOND STRAIGHT HOME GAME

Kyle Vinich

CHADRON – The Chadron State College men’s basketball team put together a strong second half to earn a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Colorado Christian 75-71 Friday at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Trailing by only six points at half despite shooting just 27% from the field and missing all 4 of their 3-point attempts, the Eagles used some timely shooting to grab a 52-48 lead with just less than nine minutes to play.

With the game tied 62-62 Zac Bargen hit a clutch 3-pointer to give the Eagles its biggest lead since the 9-minute mark. However, it was short-lived as Avery Redmond came down on the Cougars’ next possession and hit a 3-pointer of his own.

The remaining four minutes went back and forth until the Eagles grabbed a 4-point lead after another bucket from Bargen.

With 40 seconds to play Kyle Weaver cut the Eagles lead to 73-71. Following a missed shot on the Eagles’ next possession, Colorado Christian had a chance to tie or win the game but Chris Taylor applied aggressive defense on the inbound play and forced a bad pass that gave the ball back to the Eagles with only 7.6 seconds left.

Bargen was fouled on the ensuing inbound play and calmly knocked down both free throws to ice the game. He led the Eagles with 20 points…14 in the second half and with a perfect 10-10 from the foul line…and added 7 rebounds.
Kendrick Holliman added 16 and Kyle Vinich finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.

Redmond had 21 to lead Colorado Christian, which slips to 13-9 and 10-8 in conference heading into a Saturday night game at Black Hills State.

The Eagles, now 3-19 overall and 3-15 in the RMAC, will host Colorado Mines Saturday night in their final home game of the season. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m.

After the game, the local Fellowship of Christian Athletes huddle is hosting a Fifth-Quarter party as part of its Western Nebraska Husker tour.

NU football players Imani Cross and Mike Rose will be there to meet with students and area residents and to share their faith in Jesus Christ and how it shows in their lives both on and off the field.

WNCC MEN, WOMEN SWEEP OTERO ON THE ROAD

WNCC_Cougar _ 250 Pixels              LA JUNTA, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams picked up important South Sub-Region wins on Friday over Otero Junior College.

The No. 23 WNCC women received a double-double from Gritt Ryder with 21 points and 11 rebounds in posting the 58-47 win.

The men received a double-double from Quante Cooley of 12 points and 12 rebounds in giving the Rattlers their first sub-region loss, 78-69.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said his team played with lots of composure in the contest to get the important win that moves them to 4-8 in conference play.

“Our defense was really good and we got stops when we need to,” he said. “They have not lost at home in the sub-region and they were 9-1 at home coming in. We are starting to play our best ball right now.”

The key for the Cougars was that they jumped out to a 20-5 lead and led 44-34 at halftime after Tahir Little hit a near half court shot at the buzzer. In the second half, the Rattlers sliced the lead to one point with about 10 minutes to play, but this time the Cougars held their composure and fought to the end to get the win.

WNCC shot the ball really well, hitting on 48 percent from the field compared to 34 percent for the Rattlers. WNCC also sizzled from the 3-point area, connecting on 43 percent while Otero was 23 percent. The Cougars also hit their free throws, going 14 of 18 from the line for 82 percent.

WNCC had four players finish in double figures. Cooley had a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds, but the team was led by Cody Johnson, who poured in 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds. Johnson had 19 points at halftime.

Also hitting double digits were Charles Ward with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Little had 12 points.

For the ladies, the win pushed the team to within one win of winning the South Sub-Region and hosting the regional tournament that begins March 3.

Assistant coach Ipek Turkyilmaz said they only shot 28 percent in the first half but heated up both offensively and defensively in the second half, shooting 39 percent. They also connected on five 3-pointers on the night. Ryder was 3 of 6 from beyond the arc, while Brower was 1 of 3. Brower leads the nation in 3-point shooting at 54.2 percent.

LADY EAGLES AVENGE BIG LOSSES TO COLORADO CHRISTIAN

CHADRON — After jumping out to a 14-2 lead in the first six minutes, the Chadron State  College women’s basketball team led all the way en route to a 67-55 victory over Colorado Christian in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game Friday night.

Chadron State led 28-19 at halftime and was ahead by at least 10 points throughout the second half against a team that had already beaten them twice by a combined  65 points…106-68 on Nov. 16 and 91-64 on Dec. 8, both in Denver.

Four Eagles scored in double figures this time, led by junior forward Kattie Ranta‘s 18 points. Guards Hattie Guzman and Dallas Shaw combined to make nine 3-pointers while scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively. Center Sadie Waugh added 11 points and Kate Simonton handed out six assists.

Both Ranta and Shaw grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Eagles to a 51-30 advantage off the glass.

Shaw sank three treys and Guzman one as Chadron State built its early lead. Coach Tim Connealy said the fast start was a big boost for the Eagles because it allowed them to slow the pace and keep the Cougars from getting their high-scoring offense in gear.

“We finally slowed them down,” Connealy said. “We could take our time before shooting and then we shot pretty well (40 percent).”

Sophomore Kayla Fakelman and freshman Taylor Torres led Colorado Christian in scoring with 12 points apiece. But while Guzman and Shaw were making nine of 23 3-point shots, the Cougars were just four of 22 from behind the arc.

Colorado Christian is now 13-9 for the season and 10-8 in the RMAC. The Eagles are 4-18 and 4-14.

The Eagles will host Colorado Mines Saturday night in their final home game of the season.  Before the game, they will honor center Sadie Waugh…the only senior on either CSC basketball team this year.
