WYOMING COACH UNDER FIRE FROM FUNDRAISER

LARAMIE, Wyo. (AP) – The University of Wyoming’s chief fundraiser voiced harsh criticism of coach Dave Christensen in an email to UW Athletics Director Tom Burman.

The next day Burman suspended Christensen for a week and fined him $50,000.

The email from UW Foundation Director Ben Blalock was obtained through a public records request by the Casper Star-Tribune ( HYPERLINK “http://bit.ly/Ud7z64” ).

Christensen cussed out Air Force coach Troy Calhoun following Wyoming’s loss on Oct. 13. Christensen apologized the next day and coached the following week’s game at Fresno State.

But a video of his tirade went viral, and Blalock’s email followed on Oct. 21, saying the foundation felt foolish in supporting the coach.

Christensen missed one game because of the suspension and returned to coach the Cowboys’ win over Colorado State on Saturday.

IOWA STATE ONE WIN FROM BOWL ELIGIBLE

AMES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa State recently unveiled a shiny new $20 million football complex that should help the program compete with their much wealthier neighbors in the Big 12.

The first order of business is to earn a reason to keep it humming in December.

The Cyclones (5-4, 2-4 Big 12) remain one win shy of bowl eligibility after falling to Oklahoma on Saturday for the 70th time in 77 tries. For a program that has reached a bowl games just 11 times, a third bowl bid in four years would represent major progress.

Iowa State travels to face No. 19 Texas (7-2, 4-2) on Saturday seeking its second straight win in Austin and that all-important sixth win of 2012.

NU BASKETBALL PLAYER BIGGS TO REDSHIRT

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) _ Nebraska basketball coach Tim Miles has announced that Deverell Biggs will sit out this season as a redshirt. Miles said Monday the decision to redshirt Biggs came after a “pretty quick conversation” between player and coach.

Biggs is eligible to play in Wednesday’s exhibition against Midland University, and Miles said the junior guard might get some minutes. Biggs is a two-time all-state selection out of Omaha Central High School. The 6-foot guard earned first-team junior-college All-America honors last season at Seward County Community College in Kansas. Biggs was the first player signed by Miles after he became coach last spring. Biggs is the first in-state scholarship player to join the Cornhuskers since 2001.
