WNCC WOMEN BEAT COLORADO NORTHWEST CC, 58-41

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put three players in double figures in posting their third victory of the season after dropping Colorado Northwestern Community College 58-41 in the second day of the Ambassador Classic in Colby, Kan.

Jess Samorodova paced all scorers with 14 points followed by Idil Ozbayrak with 12 points and Gritt Ryder with 10 points.

WNCC head coach Dave Harnish said they once again played pretty good first-half defense, but they still have to improve their shooting.

“Defensively, I thought we were strong all game, holding then to 22 points in the first half, and I think the defense was pretty solid,” Harnish said. “We played well and caused 36 turnovers. What we aren’t doing is capitalizing the turnovers into points. We are still struggling in that part. We also had 22 turnovers.”

The Cougars held a slim 27-22 halftime lead and then came out in the second half and played strong defense, holding the Spartans to just 19 points.

The Cougars had a balanced scoring attack in the game. After the three double figure scorers, Jessica Aratani and Shalisa Moffit each had six points.

The Cougars nailed just 1 of 7 from the 3-point area and were 13 of 24 from the free throw line. Ozbayrak had a team high nine steals, while Samorodova had nine rebounds, followed by six each from Ryder and Ashley Stevens.

Harnish said he is pleased to be unbeaten right now, especially with the number of freshmen and newcomers that are on the team.

“You have to be happy being 3-0 especially how we are playing defense,” Harnish said. “Now, if we can get our offense going we will be a pretty good team right now.”

The Cougars, 3-0, will wrap up the Ambassador Classic on Saturday when they face Fort Carson Army Base at 1 p.m. WNCC will then return home to host Colorado Christian junior varsity on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

HOOPER SCORES SEVEN IN HUSKER WIN

Lincoln – Lindsey Moore scored a game-high 15 points to lead the No. 18 Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 68-50 win over North Carolina A&T on Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers won their season opener for the eighth straight season and the 37th time in 39 all-time games.

Moore, a 5-9 senior point guard from Covington, Wash., hit 4-of-9 shots from the field, including 2-of-5 threes while adding 5-of-7 free throws. She also dished out three assists and grabbed three rebounds while adding two steals.

Sophomore forward Hailie Sample added one of the best games of her career with 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Fellow sophomore Brandi Jeffery added double figures of her own with 10 points, two rebounds and an assist in the first start of her career.

Nebraska got contributions across the board, as 10 Huskers scored in the game, including seven points, a game-high nine rebounds and a career-high four assists from junior Jordan Hooper. The 6-2 forward from Alliance, Neb., went just 3-of-13 from the field for the game, including 0-of-6 in the first half. She was just 1-of-8 from three-point range, but supplied big contributions at the defensive end with eight defensive rebounds and one steal.

Sophomore forward Emily Cady added seven points, four rebounds, two assists, a game-high two blocks and a steal. She went 3-for-5 from the floor with both of her misses coming from long range.

Senior forward Meghin Williams supplied big production off the bench with six points and four boards in just 10 minutes, while freshman Sadie Murren pitched in five points in the first game of her career. Fellow freshman Rachel Theriot added a three-pointer at the buzzer to close the first half to send the Huskers to the locker room with a 35-25 lead.

JaQuayla Berry led North Carolina A&T with nine points and eight rebounds, while Ariel Bursey scored all nine of her points in the first half for the Aggies. A&T had nine players find the scoring column, but no one managed double figures for a team that featured five returning starters, including three who averaged double figures a year ago.

Nebraska jumped to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes, before A&T rallied to tie the game at 14 off a jumper from Bursey with 11:23 left in the first half. Bursey capped a 9-0 A&T run with another jumper to give the Aggies an 18-14 edge with 8:45 left in the opening period.

Moore ended the run by knocking down her second three just six seconds later, and gave the Huskers the lead back with a pair of free throws to make it 22-20 with 5:42 left. Tracy King answered with a three to give the Aggies their final lead of the game at 24-23 with 4:02 left in the half.

Nebraska held North Carolina A&T without a field goal the rest of the half, as NU went on a 13-2 surge in the final 4:02, capped by Theriot’s three off a pass from Moore to make it 35-25 at the break.

The Huskers pushed the lead to 14 off a three-point play from Sample and five straight points from Hooper off assists from Sample to make it 43-29. But the Aggies, who returned 11 players with starts from a team that won 15 games a year ago, continued to fight. A&T used a 7-0 run to cut NU’s edge to 45-38 with 15:20 left.

Nebraska responded again with a 13-5 surge over the next seven minutes to increase its lead to 58-43 with 8:30 left on Murren’s backdoor layup off an assist from Williams. Nebraska’s lead grew to 19 points at 66-47 on an Adrianna Maurer free throw with 1:37 left, as the Huskers held the Aggies to just one field goal during an 11-minute stretch in the second half.

Nebraska hit just 39.7 percent (23-58) of its shots for the game, including just 19.2 percent (5-26) from three-point range. The Huskers won big at the free throw line though, hitting 17-of-24 shots while holding A&T to just 7-of-13 shooting. NU outrebounded A&T, 43-36, while winning the turnover battle, 20-16.

The Huskers held the Aggies to just 35.2 percent (19-54) shooting from the field, but A&T hit 35.7 percent (5-of-14) threes on the night.

Nebraska returns to home action on Sunday when the Huskers play host to Temple. Tip-off between the 1-0 Huskers and 1-0 Owls at the Devaney Center is set for 2:05 p.m. Live radio coverage will be provided by the Husker Sports Network, including B107.3 FM in Lincoln and 93.3 FM in Omaha, along with free live audio on Huskers.com. A live video stream of the game will be available to subscribers of BTN.com.

REGIS SERVES PAST CHADRON STATE IN FOUR SETS

CHADRON – Regis University’s Katie Klein had 13 kills and Caite Breaux added 11 more as the No. 14 Rangers turned back Chadron State in their Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference match 20-25, 25-12, 25-17, 25-14 Friday evening in Chadron.

Chadron State (5-23, 2-16 RMAC) will host No. 23 Metro State in the season finale tonight (Saturday). First serve is set for 6 p.m.

On Friday, the Rangers, now 21-8 overall and 15-3 in the RMAC, dropped a tightly contested first set but controlled the remainder of the match, thanks in large part to their service game.

Regis served 11 aces – Rebecca Sponcil had a match-high four and Klein and Makayla Higgins each added three more – and received 10 more points after Chadron State service errors.

For the match, Regis hit .149 while Chadron State had a hitting percentage of .110.

Erika Roybal and Lexi Hoagland paced the Eagles’ offense with nine kills apiece and Mollie Jones, who had a team-high 17 digs, added eight more.

Also for Chadron State, Justine Ackie had 22 set assists and Mallory Irvine had four blocks.

QUICK STRIKING NITTANY LIONS INVADE MEMORIAL STADIUM

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska football team continued their preparations on Thursday afternoon for this weekend’s cross-divisional matchup with Penn State. The Huskers split between the Hawks Championship Center and the Ed and Joyanne Gass practice fields, practicing for just over 90 minutes in helmets and shorts.

Following practice, Head Coach Bo Pelini met with members of the media, discussing how the Blackshirts would adjust to PSU’s tendency to go for it in fourth down situations.

“We’re going to play the next down and treat it like another third down snap if that’s the way they choose to go,” Pelini said. “I’ve looked at all the fourth downs and the situations. We’ll be ready if they do.”

Pelini also addressed why the Nittany Lions have allowed so few sacks of quarterback Matt McGloin this season.

“He’s a real quick-rhythm thrower,” Pelini said. “He gets the ball in and out; a lot of quick rhythm passing game. Hopefully we can challenge and get on some routes, and they can hold the ball a little bit longer.”

Four Nebraska team members (Rex Burkhead, Sean Fisher, Jake Long and Spencer Long) were selected to the Capitol One Academic All-District 7 football team on Thursday. When asked for his thoughts on the academic awards earned by his team, Pelini said it sets a high bar for the rest of the team to achieve as well.

“I’d like that list to keep growing,” Pelini said. “We put a high value on what these kids are doing academically and what we ask them to do. It’s a good example for the rest of the football team, because that’s what they’re here to do first. First and foremost, you’re a student.”

The Huskers will conduct a final walk-through practice on Friday afternoon before facing the Nittany Lions on Saturday. The game will be broadcast regionally on ABC and ESPN2, with kick-off set for 1:30 p.m. MST, with radio coverage on AM 1400, KCOW in Alliance.

ALLIANCE NATIVE SCORES THREE IN HUSKER BASKETBALL WIN

2010 Alliance High School graduate Michael Peltz began his career with the University of Nebraska men’s basketball team on Nov. 7 when the Husker beat Midland University of Fremont, 68-40, at the Devaney Center in Lincoln.

Peltz played 18 minutes.  He scored 3 points, pulled down 3 rebounds and committed 2 fouls.

Here is Peltz’ profile from Huskers.com.

2012-13 (Outlook)
A late addition to the Husker basketball roster, junior college transfer Mike Peltz joined the team prior to the start of practice in October. A walk-on, Peltz will add depth to the Husker backcourt which looks to replace their top two point guards from a year ago.

Before Nebraska
Peltz was a two-year captain at Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff, Neb., playing for Coach Russ Beck. As a sophomore in 2011-12, Peltz averaged 7.5 points, 6.2 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in helping WNCC to a 26-7 record and the school’s first national ranking since 2005. Peltz ranked fifth nationally in the NJCAA in assists and had a 3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio running an offense which featured five players that averaged double figures. One of five players who are playing Division I basketball this season, he had 10 games with at least eight assists, including a season-best 15 assist effort against Oglala Lakota College when he also had 12 points and 10 rebounds. It was one of three triple-doubles he recorded during his junior college career. Offensively, he reached double figures seven times, including a season-high 20 points against Lake Region State College. As a freshman, he averaged 7.0 points, 2.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game in 29 contests. Peltz also excelled in the classroom, carrying a 3.83 GPA and had the highest GPA among male athletes at WNCC.

Peltz played at Alliance High School, where he averaged 23 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game as a senior for Coach Michael Baker to earn district MVP and honorable-mention all-state honors by the Lincoln Journal Star. Peltz was also a Class B all-state selection as a junior, averaging 19 points per game, as he led Class B in scoring in both his junior and senior campaigns. A three-year starter, Peltz totaled over 1,000 career points in high school. He also played football as a wide receiver, earning all-conference honors before missing most of his senior year because of an injury. He also garnered academic all-state honors in each of his final three years at Alliance High School.

Personal
Mike Peltz is the son of Terry and Yvette Peltz and was born on Feb. 12, 1992, in Alliance, Neb. He has three older brothers, Al, Butch and TJ. Butch was a four-year starting safety at Nebraska-Kearney in football who ranks among the school’s career tackle leaders, while TJ also played basketball at Western Nebraska CC for a season and served as an assistant coach at the school. Mike chose to walk-on at Nebraska after receiving scholarship offers from nearly a dozen Division II programs, and chances to walk on at other Division I programs. He is majoring in sociology at Nebraska.

SIDNEY WINS, CHADRON LOSES AT STATE VOLLEYBALL

Sidney kept the Nebraska state volleyball tournament from being a wipeout for the Panhandle, holding on for a 5-set opening round Class-B victory over Norris last night at the Heartland Events Center in Grand Island 25-23, 12-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-9.

By the time the 3rd-seeded Red Raiders took the court, the only other two Panhandle teams…Chadron and Leyton…had already been eliminated in straight sets…leaving Sidney as the region’s last hope.

They responded by winning the first and third sets, but the momentum seemed to be against them going into the final set.

Sidney coach Sarah Wilson said after the match that one thing she likes about her players is their ability to maintain their confidence when things don’t go well…such as at the end of the fourth set.

The Red Raiders grabbed an early 5-2 lead in the decisive 5th set and never gave it up…helped by 6 unforced Norris errors, including on 2 of the final 3 points.

The win puts Sidney into the semifinals for the first time time since 1993. They meet Gretna, who upset 2nd-seeded Omaha Gross in 4 sets…25-20, 26-24, 12-25, 27-25. The match is in the Heartland Center at 4:00 CT.

In C-1, Chadron was out for revenge after losing to Ogallala last Friday in the B-6 District final, but the Indians had an answer for everything the Cardinals tried in taking a 25-19, 26-24, 26-24 sweep.

Chadron coach Don Matt said afterward that the big difference was state tournament experience. It was the Cardinals first trip to state since 2003 while Ogallala was there for the seventh straight year, and Mott said his club just didn’t handle it well.

He also said the Cardinals didn’t handle the Ogallala serving, which kept Chadron from getting into its attack. Ogallala coach Steve Morgan said he’s emphasized aggressive serving the past 2 seasons.

Chadron was led by Ashlyn Eitemiller with a match-high 15 kills and a block and by Alia Brennan with 9 kills and 6 blocks. Chadron ends the season 27-4 with 2 losses to Ogallala and 2 losses to Sidney.

Morgan Reed finished with 13 kills for Ogallala, in the semifinals for the first time since 2004. They’ll take on 2nd-seeded Columbus Scotus at 6:30 CT.

In D-2, Leyton won its first 31 games this season, but ends with a 2-match losing streak after falling to Mullen in the district finals and yesterday to 5th-seeded Cedar Valley 25-23, 25-11, 25-21.

Leyton couldn’t match the Cedar Valley defense, which had 79 digs in the 3 sets, or the Mavericks’ Skyler Erickson…who had 23 kills and 30 digs. Leyton coach Jodi Craig said Erickson was one of the best players the Warriors had seen this year.

Kelsey Waite and Ernest each had five kills to pace Leyton, which ends 31-2. Cedar Valley moves on to play Mead in the semifinals.

Mullen came into the state tournament as a district champion, but as the 7th seed and couldn’t shake an early case of the nerves against Humphrey…dropping the first set 25-5. They regained their composure, but still lost the next 2 sets 25-17 and 25-22 to end the season 22-10.

The Eagles certainly got that off to a strong start when they shook off a first set loss at South Dakota Mines and rallied to win the next three. Tuesday’s victory improved them to 5-22 on the season.
