COLORADO MESA 77, CSC (MEN) 62

CHADRON – Colorado Mesa’s Colton Burgon scored 26 points, including 18 after intermission, and the Mavericks used a 13-0 scoring run during a three-minute stretch midway in the second half to defeat Chadron State 77-62 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

The Eagles, now 0-5 and 0-1 in the RMAC, will host Western State tonight (Saturday). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.

The two teams traded punches through much of the game but Mesa (5-0, 1-0 RMAC) pulled away after Chadron State tied it up at 44-44 with 12:29 to play by going on a 13-0 run, keyed by six points from Burgon. Chadron State fought back and cut Mesa’s lead to 59-52 after a jumper from Grant Stone but Burgon scored four straight and the Mavs pushed their lead back up to double digits. Zac Bargen led three Chadron State players in double figures with 22 points and five rebounds. Grant Stone and David Downey also scored in double digits, finishing with 12. The Eagles shot well from the free throw line – they made 24 of 28 attempts – but were just 16 of 39 from the field. Colorado Mesa took 20 more shots than CSC – the Mavs sank 30 of 59 from the floor – and scored 35 points off 27 Chadron State turnovers.

COLORADO MESA 87, CSC (WOMEN) 43

CHADRON — The Colorado Mesa women’s basketball team shot 50 percent from the field and used a stifling man-to-man defense to limit Chadron State to just 25 percent shooting during an 87-43 victory in the opening game of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule for both teams here Friday night. The Mavericks, now 5-0 for the season, held a 38-11 bulge at halftime and then connected on 62.5 percent (20-32) of their field goal attempts in the second half.Mesa was led in scoring by Kelsey Sigl, a 6-foot senior and the RMAC’s preseason player of the year, with 17 points. Bruna Deichmann, a 5-9 senior, came off the bench to score 15 points and collected seven rebounds.

Also for the Mavericks, Hanna Bowden scored 11 points and grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, and Effo Baker added 10 points and passed out six assists.

Dallas Shaw scored 11 points and both Kattie Ranta and Kate Simonton added 10 for the Eagles, now 0-4.

The pressure Mesa applied on defense forced 20 turnovers by the Eagles in the first half. CSC had just six turnovers in the second half and also was 13 of 17 from the free throw line after not going to the line in the opening half.

CSC will host Western State tonight (Saturday) at 6 while Colorado Mesa will visit Black Hills State in more conference action.

CSC WOMEN HOST COLO MESA IN RMAC OPENER

CHADRON – The Chadron State College women’s basketball team will open its Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule at home this weekend when the Eagles host Colorado Mesa Friday and Western State Saturday.

Both games tip off at 6 p.m. at Armstrong Gymnasium.

The CSC women are 0-3 against strong competition. Junior forward Kattie Ranta has been both the scoring and rebounding leader during the early games.  She is averaging 16 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Dallas Shaw is next on the scoring chart at 14 points a game.

The other starters for coach Tim Connealy in all three games have been freshmen Hattie Guzman and Jazmine Lopez at the guards and 6-foot3 junior Greer Babbe at center.

The Eagles got a shot in the arm while playing in a tournament in Denver the second week of November, when sophomore Kate Simonson made her initial appearance of the season after overcoming some leg injuries. Simonson tallied 14 points during her season debut.

Connealy said another guard, junior transfer Lisa Durden, appears to be nearly fully recovered from a concussion that has caused her to miss the first three games.
Both Colorado Mesa teams have their seasons off to a good start.

The Mesa women are 4-0 and the Mavericks’ men are 3-1.

One of the Lady Mavs’ wins was a 69-47 decision over Montana State-Billings, which won 79-64 when it played the Eagles in Chadron on Nov. 11.

The Mesa leaders include Kesley Sigl, a 6-foot senior who was selected as the RMAC’s Preseason Player of the Year by the coaches. She averaged 18.3 points and 6.3 rebounds last season and has averaged 14.8 points and 7.3 rebounds so far this season.

The Lady Mavs also include sisters Sharaya and Katrina Selsor, who are averaging 14.3 and 13.8 points, respectively. Katrina also is averaging 8.3 rebounds and has 12 steals. She is a 6-1 senior while Sharaya is a 5-9 junior.
The Western State teams are off to a rather slow start this winter. The Lady Mountaineers are 0-4 and have been outscored by an average of 67 to 43.8 points while the Western men are 1-3, but they’ve played two Division I opponents.

The Western women have a new coach.  Van Girard moved to Gunnison in June after winning 302 games during 24 years as the head coach at California State-Dominguez.

The team’s top scorer so far is 5-10 sophomore Jade McIntosh, who is shooting 45 percent from the field and has made 17 of 18 free throws while averaging 15 points a game. None of her teammates are averaging more than 5.0.

The Lady Mountaineers’ losses have been to Central Washington, Seattle Pacific, Emporia State and Cal Baptist, all by at least 16 points.

WNCC WOMEN IMPROVE TO 9-0

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Gritt Ryder and Jess Samorodova each scored 15 points and the Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team remained unbeaten with a 64-38 win over Adams State College junior varsity Thursday at the Air Force Prep tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo.

WNCC coach Dave Harnish said his team played well defensively, but came out sluggish offensively. He said that might because of the 10-day layoff between games. The Cougar women last played Nov. 20 when they defeated Casper 72-42.

“The first half we were a little bit sluggish and we actually didn’t pull away. We didn’t score well tonight, but I thought we played defense well,” Harnish said. “The second half we came out real strong and opened up a 30-point lead at 55-20 before we started to play the bench.”

Harnish said it was tight for the first part of the contest until they opened up the contest with a late first-half run to lead 31-13 at the break. The second half saw the Cougars lead balloon to 30 points.

“We haven’t played in a week and a half,” he said. “We just didn’t shoot the ball very well. We need to play better tomorrow [Friday]. The Las Vegas Heat has a 6-foot-4 girl that is athletic and most of their players are like 25 years old.”

The Cougars also received seven points each from Laurin Rivera and Maurissa Ortega, while Shalisa Moffitt collected six points.

WNCC, 9-0, will get a test tonight at 6:00 when they take on the Las Vegas Heat, which is an all-star team.  The Cougars will then wrap up the Air Force Prep Classic tomorrow against the host team at 4 p.m.

WNCC (9-0)                        31 33 – 64

Adams State JV                 13 25 – 38

Gritt Ryder 15, Kelsey Doddridge 2, Jessica Aratani 2, Jess Samorodova 15, Ashley Stevens 4, Laurin Rivera 7, Shalisa Moffitt 6, Mikayla Brower 4, Jenna Lindquist 2, Maurissa Ortega 7.

HUSKERS AND SOONERS TO MEET IN 2021 AND 2022

(Huskers.com) – The Nebraska Athletic Department announced Thursday that it has signed a contract for a home-and-home football series with the University of Oklahoma. The two long-time rivals will renew their historic rivalry with games in 2021 in Norman and 2022 in Lincoln.

The first matchup is scheduled for Sept. 18, 2021, at Oklahoma, and the teams will meet at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln on Sept. 17, 2022.

“Our rivalry with Oklahoma has been one of the great traditional matchups in the history of college football,” Nebraska Athletic Director Tom Osborne said. “The games between the two schools were generally to decide a conference championship, and many times helped determine the national champion. Those matchups were always played with great intensity on the field, but with a great deal of respect from both sides and among the fan bases.

“I know our fans look forward to non-conference games against high-profile opponents like Oklahoma. I’m pleased we were able to finalize this series.”

The long-time Big Six, Big Seven, Big Eight and Big 12 foes have met 86 times on the gridiron, with Oklahoma holding a 45-38-3 advantage in the all-time series. The schools met 71 straight seasons from 1927 to 1998, before the Big 12’s scheduling rotation changed the annual matchup.

The 2021 game in Norman will commemorate the 50th anniversary of the 1971 “Game of the Century” between the schools. The contest is the most famous in the series and generally regarded as one of the greatest games in college football history. Top-ranked Nebraska edged No. 2 Oklahoma, 35-31, in Norman and went on to capture its second straight national championship.

The Game of the Century started a run of NU-OU games from 1971 to 1988 in which both teams were ranked in the top 11 of the Associated Press Poll in 17 of 19 meetings. Overall, at least one team has been ranked in the top 10 nationally in 48 of the games, with two top 10 teams 18 times. Since the Associated Press Poll began, the “Battle of the Big Reds” has featured at least one ranked team in 60 of 70 games.

Nebraska holds a 9-6 lead in the series since 1991. The last meeting between the two schools occurred in the 2010 Big 12 Championship Game, with Oklahoma posting a 23-20 victory in Arlington, Texas. Nebraska won the most recent regular-season matchup between the schools, posting a 10-3 win in Lincoln in 2009. Nebraska holds a 20-17-2 advantage in Lincoln, while Oklahoma has a 23-16 edge in games played in Norman.

The games with Oklahoma are the first games on Nebraska’s schedule in 2021 and 2022. Nebraska expects to announce other future non-conference games in the coming weeks.
