The Jays opened with a 69-48 loss to No. 12 Oklahoma and suffered a 58-48 loss to No. 22 Kansas on Nov. 25. Both of those games were on CU’s homecourt. Creighton owns road wins at South Dakota State, South Dakota and BYU.

All-America candidates Jordan Hooper and Lindsey Moore lead the Huskers. Hooper produced her third double-double of the year with 29 points and 10 rebounds against Idaho State. She is averaging team-bests of 17.9 points and 8.8 boards per game. Moore has added 15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.8 steals while producing double figures in NU’s first eight games.

NEBRASKA WILL GET BEST TEST VS. # 16 CREIGHTON

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska’s back-to-back, double-digit wins over opponents from BCS conferences have at least piqued the interest of what has been a generally apathetic fan base when it comes to men’s basketball.

A win at Wake Forest last week and one at home over Southern California on Monday improved the Cornhuskers to 6-1, their best start since 2008-09.

First-year coach Tim Miles says the Huskers will get a better read on themselves when they host 16th-ranked Creighton (7-1) on Thursday.

Nebraska has lost 10 of the last 14 meetings with its in-state rival but won three straight against the Bluejays in Lincoln. Miles said he doesn’t think the Huskers will raise any eyebrows in the Big Ten or nationally unless they beat Creighton.

HUSKER MEN DOWN USC, 63-51

Lincoln, Neb. – Junior Ray Gallegos scored 20 points to lead the Nebraska men’s basketball team to a 63-51 victory over Southern California on Monday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

The Huskers improve to 6-1 following the win over the Trojans. Gallegos was one of two Huskers to score double figures on Monday night, going 6-for-10 behind the three-point line. Senior Dylan Talley added 14 points for Nebraska.

The Huskers built a 33-25 lead at halftime and extended it to as high as 20 in the second half. The Trojans had three players in double figures: J.T. Terrell (14), Bryon Wesley (12) and Jio Fontan (11).

THREE DIVISION CHAMPS CROWNED ON SUNDAY

UNDATED (AP) — The Broncos, Patriots and Falcons clinched division titles on Sunday, and the Texans assured themselves of at least a wild-card berth in the playoffs.

Denver won the AFC West with 31-23 victory over Tampa Bay. A seventh straight win has the Broncos sitting at 9-3.

The loss by the Buccaneers gives Atlanta the NFC South championship. The Falcons improved to 11-1 with a win over New Orleans on Thursday night and they are tied with Houston for the best record in the NFL. The Texans haven’t secured the AFC South yet because they still have two games remaining with runner-up Indianapolis. The Colts are 8-4 after shocking Detroit 35-33 on the final play of their game.

New England won its fourth AFC East crown in a row as it downed Miami, 23-16. The Patriots also 9-3.

Northern Illinois is BCS buster

MIAMI (AP) — The final standings are out, and Northern Illinois is the first team from the Mid-American Conference to be selected to play in a BCS Bowl game. The Huskies will face traditional ACC power Florida State in the Orange Bowl.

It comes as no surprise that unbeaten Notre Dame and one-loss Alabama will meet in the title game on Jan. 7 in Miami.

NEBRASKA, GEORGIA TO MEET IN JAN. 1 CAPITAL ONE BOWL

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Nebraska will play Georgia in the Capital One Bowl Jan. 1 at the Florida Citrus Bowl.

The Cornhuskers, who lost to Wisconsin in the Big Ten championship game, are appearing the Capital One Bowl for the second straight season. They fell to South Carolina in last season’s matchup.

Nebraska (10-3) will be making its 49th bowl appearance, coming off its third 10-win season in four years.

Georgia, from the Southeastern Conference, is making its sixth appearance in the Capital One Bowl, having last beaten Michigan State in 2009.

The Bulldogs (11-2) won the SEC East for the second consecutive year, but fell to Alabama in the conference championship game.

This will mark the second time Georgia and Nebraska have met. Nebraska defeated the Bulldogs 45-6 in the 1969 Sun Bowl.

CHADRON GIRLS, SB BOYS TAKE TOURNEY TITLES

The Scottsbluff boys and Chadron girls took the titles Saturday night in the Western Conference Invitational Tournament. Chadron girls claimed its second straight  championship 54-45 over Sidney while Scottsbluff grabbed its third straight WCIT crown 65-52 over Omaha Skutt Catholic.

Chadron trailed Sidney 14-10 after the opening quarter, but took a 25-20 lead into the half and led throughout the second half. The Raiders cut the margin to 2 points several times…the last 39-37 late in the third…but couldn’t get closer than 4 in the final period.

Chadron…#2 in Class C-1 in the Omaha World-Herald preseason poll…was led by 28 points from Ashlea Kerr, while Peyton Hinn chipped in with 13. Sidney was led in scoring by Karissa Segelke with 13 points and Kylee Price with 11.

A huge offensive game by Michael Hadden and a strong defensive effort were the keys to Scottsbluff’s win over Skutt.

Hadden had a game-high 39 points…including 21 of 26 from the foul line, where Scottsbluff was 24-36 while Skutt attempted just one free throw in the final 3 periods.

Skutt led 13-12 after one quarter, but an 11-0 run midway through the second period put the Bearcats up 23-17 and they stayed on top for good. Scottsbluff…ranked #1 in Class B by the Omaha World-Herald…never let Skutt get closer than 3 after

Scottsbluff Coach Tony Siske called it a very big win and confidence boost for the defending state champions who lost heavily to graduation.
