WNCC MEN DOWN MILES COMMUNITY COLLEGE, 68-59

POWELL,, Wyo. — Western Nebraska Community College’s Cody Johnson put up another double-double performance as the Cougar men’s basketball team captured their sixth win of the season with a 68-59 win over Miles Community College on Friday at the Northwest Wyoming Classic.

Johnson finished the contest with 16 points and 12 rebounds and it was his second straight double-double contest after scoring 25 points and pulling down 18 rebounds a week ago in an overtime win against Northwest Kansas Technical College.

WNCC also received a couple other outstanding performances. Willie Mangum finished with 14 points, six assists, and four rebounds, while Charles Ward had 12 points and five rebounds.

The Cougars ran out to a 41-27 lead at halftime.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said the big key was his squad out-rebounded Miles 41-27.

Still, Beck said, his team needs to be ready to play Saturday night when they face the host squad Northwest Wyoming. The Trappers opened their home tournament with a 95-29 win over Aaniiih Nakoda College.

“We got the win,” Beck said. “Now we need to refocus and get this win tomorrow.”

After Saturday’s contest, WNCC, 6-5, will be back in action Jan. 7 when they travel to face Northwest Kansas Technical College in Goodland, Kan., before opening up sub-region play Jan. 7 at Lamar Community College.

EAGLE BASKETBALL TEAMS IN DENVER

The Chadron State College basketball teams are in Colorado this weekend.

WOMEN — The women will play two more Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games in the Denver area this weekend as they play at Regis on Saturday and Metro State Saturday.

Chadron State will also play Monday, Dec. 31 at Wayne State in a non-conference game.

Saturday’s game at Regis will start at 5 p.m. while Sunday’s action at Metro will begin at 3.

The Regis women are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

The Metro women are 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the RMAC after falling to Regis, but defeating Colorado Springs 62-49 and Pueblo 54-43 last weekend.

Both games will air on Double Q Country Radio, 97.5 FM in Chadron.

MEN — The Eagles will play at Regis Saturday at 7 p.m. and Metro State Sunday at 5 p.m.

The Regis men (2-4, 1-2 RMAC) toppled the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs 77-67 on Saturday night after being thumped by Pueblo, 82-58.

Metro State, which is ranked third in the latest NABC/Division II Top 25 Poll, are averaging 82.3 points and giving up just 61 while owning a 7-0 record.

The CSC men beat the Roadrunners 65-64 in Denver last February. It was the Eagles’ first win over Metro since 1999-2000.

Both of the men’s games will be broadcast live on Double Q Country Radio, 97.5 FM in Chadron.

GORSUCH EARNS MONEY, BUT SLIPS TO 4TH OVERALL

Dean Gorsuch

At the 2012 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas…2-time world champion steer wrestler Dean Gorsuch of Gering got back in the money in last night’s Round 8, tying for 5th, but slipped to 4th in the world standings.

Only the top 6 placers in each round earn money, and the world standings add together earnings from the regular season, each round of the NFR, and the overall average placing from the NFR.

Gorsuch, an Alliance High School graduate, had gone to Las Vegas sitting 3rd and started strong by finishing 2nd in the first two rounds, but was then shut out until last night.

He trails leader and defending world champion Luke Branquinho of California by about $27,000 with 2 rounds left.

Another steer wrestler from the region…Todd Suhn of Hermosa, SD…is 9th, but just $4,200 out of 5th after finishing 4th in last night’s round.

Bareback rider Steven Dent of Mullen…who came into the NFR just $900 out of the lead…finally earned some money in Las Vegas last night, finishing 5th after not placing in the first 7 rounds. Dent has slipped all the way to 8th, some $63,000 behind overall money leader Kaycee Field of Utah..

J.R. Vezain of Cowley, Wy, continues to come on strong in the event…placing 3rd last night to remain 3rd overall about $56,000 in back of Field.

None of the 3 saddle bronc riders we’ve been following…Cole Elsher of Faith, SD, Cort Scheer of Elsmere, NE,  and 2006 world champ Chad Ferley of Oelrichs…placed last night. Elsher remains 7th, but Scheer and Ferley each slipped a spot and are now 11th and 13th respectively.

In barrel racing, both Lisa Lockhart of Oelrichs and Trula Churchill of Valentine earned money last night, placing 4th and 5th respectively. Lockhart placed for the 5th straight round and now has nearly $121,000 while Churchill is at about $85,000.

SIX EAGLES EARN RMAC CROSS-COUNTRY ALL-ACADEMIC HONORS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Chadron State College senior cross country runner Kelley Troester has been named to the 2012 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Men’s Cross Country All-Academic Second Team.

To be eligible for the team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30, be a starter or key reserve and completed two consecutive semesters at his or her school.

Troester, a senior from Marsland, has a 3.97 GPA in rangeland management and is the first cross country runner from Chadron State to be named to the all-academic team.

Five other Eagles – three men and two women – earned honorable mention all-academic honors.

They are Gavan Archibald, a junior from St. Ann, Jamaica, Alex Johnson, a senior from Kearney, Mathew Mathiason, a junior from Pierce, Colo., Jayme Nunes, a sophomore from Alliance, and Becca Volf, a redshirt freshman from Wood River.

3 EAGLES EARN PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following a strong showing at the opening indoor track and field meet of the season, three Chadron State College track and field student-athletes have been named Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week.

Alyssa Norton is the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Charith Kapukotuwa and Alex Graham sweep the men’s track and field honors.

Norton, a junior from Rushville, recorded a career-best throw in the shot put with a heave of 46-feet, 5-inches and finished second in the 20-pound weight throw.

Graham, a junior from St. Leonardo, Jamaica, won the 60-meter dash in 6.75 seconds, just one-hundredth of a second shy of the school record he set last winter.

Finally, Kapukotuwa, a junior from Chilaw, Sri Lanka, won the 35-pound weight throw with a mark of 59-4 ¼.

All three CSC student-athletes provisionally qualified for the 2013 NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships with their winning marks.

WNCC WOMEN FOCUS ON GAME, BEAT CCU

Kelsey Doddridge

The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put the turmoil of the past few days…which included forfeiting 13 of its 14 wins and having center Evgenia Samorodova declared ineligible by the NJCAA…behind it last night and ran past the Colorado Christian University Junior Varsity 71-53 in Lakewood, Colo.

The game was WNCC’s last one of the semester and Cougar coach Dave Harnish called it “a good win to go into break,” especially given what the team has gone through and that they were missing several starters.

His review of his team’s play was more mixed. Harnish said they struggled in the first half…leading by only 13 at halftime…and didn’t finish strong in the final 4 or 5 minutes, but played well the rest of the time in pushing the lead to a many as 30 points.

WNCC showed the depth of their bench, as every Cougar who suited up played. Harnish says it was a good night to play everyone and that they all “did a decent job”…also another good way to finish off the semester.

Kelsey Doddridge and Mauriissa Ortega each hit three 3-pointers en route to double digit nights…a game-high 18 points for Doddridge and 16 for Ortega. The Cougars other trey on the night came from Mikayla Brower, who ended with 9 points…as did former Bridgeport star Ashley Stevens.

WNCC is off until January 7th, when they travel to Goodland, Kan., to take on Northwest Kansas Technical College…followed by the sub-regional opener on the road at Lamar Community College.

Harnish wishes the team didn’t have a 3-week break because they’ve been playing so well. “You really don’t want to stop; you want to keep playing while the team is playing well. You are always scared with the 3-week break what they are going to come back like.

Still, Harnish…who is in his 25th season coaching the Cougars…is optimistic “we can pick up where we left off.” He says the win over Colorado Christian sends the players out with a positive attitude, so he’s hopeful they will “have a positive attitude, work hard over break, and come back and start up where we ended.”

WNCC STAR RULED INELIGIBLE, LADY COUGARS FORFEIT 13 WINS

Jess Samorodova

The National Junior College Athletic Association has ordered the 6th-ranked and unbeaten Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team to forfeit its first 13 of the season after ruling that one of its stars ineligible.

The NJCAA says 6-3 freshman Evgenia Samorodova from Russia played on a professional team or at least on a team with a professional player earlier this year. Samorodova played in 9 games for the Cougars, averaging 14.2 points and 7 rebounds a game.

WNCC Athletic Director Ryan Burgner says the NJCAA ruling “came as a surprise” because the school did extensive “due diligence” to verify the amateur status of all of its current players prior to the start of the season. WNCC has 15 days to appeal the ruling, and Burgner says they’ll use the time to investigate the allegations.

The forfeitures are for all games prior to last Saturday and leave the Cougars 1-13, but Burgner says WNCC is still eligible for the Region IX and national tournaments. In fact, since none of the forfeited victories were Region IX contests, the Cougars have a clean slate in the regional standings.

WNCC officials say while Samorodova is not on the team, she is still a student at the college.

McAFEE RMAC WRESTLER OF THE WEEK

Chadron State College’s Perry McAfee has been named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Wrestler of the Week. McAfee, a senior from Casper, Wyo., went 2-0 last week at 133 pounds for the Eagles.

He earned a 5-2 decision over Dickinson State’s Mack Chambers in CSC’s home opener, and followed with a 12-3 major decision over Northern State’s Tyler Frost. McAfee now has a 5-5 record this season and is 2-0 during duals.

The Eagles are idle until Jan. 4 when they’ll dual Embry Riddle in Arizona.
