GAME AND PARKS DEER MEETING TUES 12/18 AT CSC

Nebraska Game and Parks brings its statewide series of public input meetings on deer problems in the state to Chadron State College with a session Tuesday night at 7:00 in the Student Center.

Wildlife manager Todd Nordeen of the Game and Parks district office in Alliance says agency biologists will explain and take questions on a number of topics including deer management, deer damage and depredation permits, antlerless harvest, trophy management and diseases.

Nordeen says the annual meetings have grown to fill an important part of the deer management process for Nebraska Game and Parks, bringing in new information and insights from the public.

Five of this year’s 7 meetings have already been held….McCook, Norfolk, Kearney, O’Neill, Gretna, and York. The only left after tonight’s 7:00 session at Chadron State College will be Thursday night in Bridgeport at the Prairie Winds Community Center, also at 7 p.m.

HUSKERS PLAY N. ILLINOIS AT SOLDIER FIELD IN 2016

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska has announced a three-game football series with Northern Illinois, including a game at Chicago’s Soldier Field.

Nebraska associate athletic director for football Jeff Jamrog said Monday that the first of the three games will take place at Soldier Field on September 24th, 2016. Northern Illinois has played neutral-site games the past two years at Soldier Field against Wisconsin and Iowa.

Northern Illinois will visit Lincoln on September 2nd, 2017 and on September 14th, 2019.

The Cornhuskers have won the only previous meetings against Northern Illinois, winning in Lincoln in 1989 and 1990.

The NIU Huskies are 12-1 this season and will play in the Orange Bowl against Florida State.

Nebraska also announced it has completed its 2014 non-conference schedule with the addition of a September 6th game against McNeese State.

CASEY BERAN ELECTED TO RMAC HALL OF FAME

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Former Chadron State College All-American football player Casey Beran has been selected as the third Eagle player to enter the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Beran, who played for the Eagles from 1995 to 1999, was the first CSC player to earn both All-American and Academic All-American honors. He’ll be inducted into the RMAC Hall during ceremonies July 12th in Colorado Springs.

A native of Sargent who played 8-man football in high school, Beran was a 3-time RMAC First-Team pick and the league’s 1999 Defensive Player of the Year. He was also named to the RMAC All-Century team in 2009 as one of the top 12 defensive players in RMAC history.

Now an orthopedic surgeon for Alegent Creighton Clinic in Omaha, Beran says that while he was “really excited” to learn of his selection to the RMAC Hall of Fame, he sees the honor as a tribute to how good the Eagles and coaches were when he played.

He says it isn’t an individual honor to him “because it makes me think of all l the great players I played with. They made what I did possible.”

Beran…whose younger brother Cory ended his own CSC career a year ago with RMAC and All-American honors himself…was part of the first 3 Eagles teams to win or share the RMAC title and the first two that reached the NCAA D-II playoffs.

As a senior, he was named a Football Gazette and USA Football First Team All-American and a Second-Team choice for the Daktronics and Associated Press Little All-American teams. He owned the CSC career record for most sacks when he graduated at 36.5, and also had 38 quarterback hurries and caused 7 fumbles.

Head coach Brad Smith…himself a member of the RMAC Hall since 2011 and the league’s Century coach…also put Beran to use on offense as a fullback and he scored 7 touchdowns as a junior and 4 as a senior.

Beran majored in human biology and graduated Magna Cum Laude in the spring of 1999, the same year he was Chadron State’s male RMAC scholar-athlete. He went on to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where he graduated in 2004 and began his medical residency.

The other Chadron State athletes in the RMAC Hall of Fame are tight end Joe Planansky…the first Eagle to enter in 2005…and linebacker Kevin Homer…inducted in 2007.

The only other football player entering the RMAC Hall in 2013 is Colorado Mines quarterback Chad Friehauf…winner of the 2004 Harlan Hill Trophy as the best player in NCAA D-II and another member of the RMAC All-Century team.

Entering from Adams State is track star Brenda Jarvis-Eriksson…a three-time NAIA National Champion and 16-time All-American as a middle distance runner and hurdler between 1983 and 86.

Crystal Krebs is the first softball player and first  UC-Colorado Springs athlete to make the Hall. A 2-time All-American, 2-time RMAC  Player of the Year, and NCAA Division II Catcher of the Year in 2004, Krebs set a new NCAA Division II home run record with 25 in 48 games in 2005.

Metro State’s Mark Worthington was the NCAA D-II Player of the Year as a senior in 2005 and helped lead the Roadrunners to the national title as a part-time starter as a freshman. He played for his native Australia in the Beijing and London Olympics, and is currently playing professionally in Serbia.

Two former Adams State coaches are part of the Class of 2013. Frank Powell began the school’s wrestling program in 1961 while still an undergraduate and coached the team for 9 years…highlighted by back-to-back NAIA national titles in 1968 and 1969, teams that are already in the RMAC Hall.

Richard Ulrich followed Powell as the Adams State wrestling coach and led the program to the RMAC title all 9 of his years there and to a trio of NAIA national titles.

Rounding out the 2013 RMAC Hall honorees are three Adams State national championship teams: the 1990 wrestling team, which claimed the school’s 8th title in the sport, and the 1990 and 1992 men’s indoor track teams, the first RMAC teams to win NAIA titles in that sport.

The 11th annual RMAC Hall of Fame ceremony will be Friday, July 12 at the Colorado Springs Marriott Hotel. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6. A table of 10 can be purchased for $500. Individual reservations are $55 prior to July 5.

The 2013 RMAC Hall of Fame class was chosen by a committee comprised of Patti Arnold, Eric Danner, Marv Kay, Todd Kelly, Con Marshall, Joan McDermott, Sarah Meier, Larry Mortensen and Smith.

HOOPER SCORES 24 AS NU DOWNS SOUTH FLORIDA

(Huskers.com) – Tampa, Fla. – Jordan Hooper and Lindsey Moore each produced 20-point games to lead the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 62-52 road win over previously unbeaten South Florida at the Sun Dome on Sunday.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 8-3 while notching its second straight win over an unbeaten Florida school. The Huskers extended their winning streak against Florida schools to 13 straight games, including series sweeps of Miami, Florida State, Florida and South Florida in recent years. USF slipped to 8-1 on the season.

Hooper produced her fifth double-double of the season and 22nd of her career with 24 points and 14 rebounds, while adding three blocked shots. It was Hooper’s second straight double-double following 36 points and 12 rebounds in last Saturday’s win over No. 24 Florida State.

Moore added 20 points, four rebounds and three assists, while hitting 8-of-13 shots from the field, including 2-of-5 threes.

Sophomore forwards Hailie Sample and Emily Cady added strong games at both ends of the court. Sample finished with six points, eight rebounds, two assists and a steal, while Cady added four points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots. Fellow sophomore Tear’a Laudermill also played a key role off the bench with seven points, including five straight to help the Huskers take a double-digit lead midway through the second half.

The Huskers went to halftime tied with the Bulls at 30, after building a seven-point lead at 30-23 with just 1:06 left in the half. Hooper led NU with 11 points and seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes, while Moore added 10 points and two assists. Cady pitched in four points and nine rebounds.

However, USF closed the half on a 7-0 run in the final 1:05 to tie the game for the fifth time in the opening half. Inga Orekhova led the Bulls with 11 points, while Andrell Smith pitched in eight points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals and her twin sister Andrea had seven points and two assists.

Nebraska hit 50 percent (12-24) of its shots in the first half, including 2-of-9 three-pointers. The Huskers were also 4-of-5 at the free throw line and won the rebounding battle, 22-17. USF hit just 33.3 percent (12-36) of its shots, including 6-of-19 three-pointers, while Andrea Smith missed all three of USF’s free throw attempts. The Bulls dominated the first-half turnover battle, 13-5.

The game was tied at 36 with 15:34 left, before Moore, Sample and Laudermill fueled a 12-0 run over the next six minutes to push NU’s lead to 12 points at 48-36 on Laudermill’s three-point play at 9:42.

Andrell Smith, who finished with 22 points and 13 rebounds for USF, hit back-to-back three-pointers around a pair of free throws by Laudermill to cut NU’s lead to eight points at 50-42 with 7:54 left. The Huskers then held the Bulls without a field goal again for more than four more minutes

Hooper scored eight points for NU during the stretch as the Huskers took their biggest lead at 60-43 with 5:08 left following a three-pointer and a pair of free throws by the 6-2 junior forward from Alliance.

Moore’s final two points came with three minutes left to keep the NU lead at 62-45, before USF scored the game’s final seven points.

Nebraska finished the game with 41.7 percent shooting (20-48), including just 5-of-23 from three-point range. But the Huskers hit 17-of-23 free throws (73.9 percent), outscoring the Bulls 17-6 at the line. NU also outrebounded the Bulls 45-44 for the game, but lost the turnover battle, 18-10.

USF hit just 26.4 percent (19-72) against Nebraska’s zone defense, including just 8-of-34 three-pointers. The Bulls were just 6-of-13 at the line.

Nebraska returns home to open a four-game home stand, when the Huskers take on Oral Roberts Thursday at the Devaney Center. Tip-off between the Huskers and the Golden Eagles, who won 20 games last season, is set for 7:05 p.m. CST. Tickets are available now on Huskers.com.
