HUSKERS FALL AT #2 MICHIGAN

(Huskers.com) – Nebraska battled No. 2 Michigan for nearly all of 40 minutes, but the Wolverines pulled away down the stretch for a 62-47 victory Wednesday night.

Ray Gallegos led all scorers with 19 points for the Huskers, including four 3-pointers, but All-American Trey Burke’s 18 points led four Michigan players in double figures as the Wolverines remained unbeaten.

Nebraska (9-7, 0-3 Big Ten) held the Wolverines to a season-low 38.9 percent shooting in holding Michigan 20 points below its season average in another strong defensive effort.

Michigan, which averaged 94.5 points in its first two Big Ten wins, was held to a season-low scoring output, but used strong rebounding to ward off a pesky Husker team. Michigan (16-0, 3-0 Big Ten) had a 47-30 advantage on the boards and held Nebraska to 33.9 percent shooting.

In addition to Burke, Tim Hardaway Jr. had 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Glenn Robinson III and Nik Stauskas added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the victors.

Nebraska played one of its best halves of basketball defensively in the first 20 minutes, holding Michigan to 32.3 percent shooting In trailing 25-20 at the break. Freshman Shavon Shields led Nebraska with six points and five rebounds, as Nebraska stood toe-to-toe with the nation’s second-ranked team.

The teams traded the lead in the early going, as Nebraska erased a 7-4 deficit with baskets from Shields and David Rivers. The Huskers led 12-11 after a Brandon Ubel jumper, capped a string of four baskets in five shots for the Huskers.

Michigan ran off seven straight points to take an 18-12 lead after a Burke 3-pointer, but Nebraska responded, as a Talley 3-pointer using an 8-3 spurt that pulled Nebraska within 21-20 after a Shields layup with 4:09 left. Michigan got baskets from Hardaway and Robinson to push the lead back to five points at the break.

In the second half, the Nebraska quickly fell behind 30-23, but the Huskers chipped away, as a 3-pointer from Gallegos and basket from Talley put the Huskers within 31-28, but Michigan would respond moments later as a 3-pointer from Stauskas off a loose ball and a Burke basket pushed the lead back to eight, at 36-28.

Nebraska would continue to hang around on the hot shooting of Gallegos, who scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half, and Dylan Talley, who added 12 points and five rebounds for the Huskers. Nebraska trimmed a nine-point deficit to 47-25 after a Gallegos’ 3-pointer with 7:12 left, but would get no closer as baskets by Robinson and Mitch McGary put the Michigan lead back to double digits.

The Huskers would make one last effort, pulling to within 55-47 after a conventional 3-point play from Gallegos, but the Wolverines scored the last seven points for the final margin.

The Huskers continue their two-game road swing on Sunday, Jan. 13, when they travel to No. 22 Michigan State. Tipoff is at 5 p.m. (central) and will televised on BTN and carried on the Husker Sports Network.

COUGARS SPLIT AT LAMAR

LAMAR, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College men and women opened south sub-region play last night in Colorado at Lamar Community College. The Lady Cougars had an easy 79-52 win, but the men lost their second straight overtime game 81-74.

In the women’s contest, WNCC took an 11 point lead, but fouls allowed the Runnin’ Lopes to close the margin to just 5 at the half…39-34. The Cougars dominated after the break, outscoring Lamar 79-18.

The WNCC’s was highlighted by eight 3-pointers…3 from Torrington’s Mikayla Brower, 2 each from Maurissa Ortega and Laurin Rivera, and 1 from Shalisa Moffit.

Four Cougars scored in double digits…3 of them area players. Ashley Stevens of Bridgeport had 17 points, Morrill’s Jessica Aratani 16, and Brower13. The other was Rivera, who had 12. Moffit added 9, Ortega’s treys accounted for her 6 points, Gritt Ryder had 5, and Michelle Brassard 2.

The men’s contest was a hard-fought contest from start to finish, with Lamar up 35-27 at halftime. The lead changed hands multiple time in the second half, and was tied at 68 at the end of regulation. Lamar jumped out to a 75-70 margin and the Cougars couldn’t catch up.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said afterward that the team’s third overtime game in its last 5 outings was frustrating because they won every statistical category except free throw shooting…which they work on every day in practice.

“”I really have loved coaching my boys this past week,” Beck said. “We have a group that listens, a group that shares the ball, and a group that is positive.

“When we decide to quit having to learn from a loss, then we will be prepared to teach the loser. I stand by this team and we will be in teh hunt by the time this is all said and done. It is one day at a time.”

Both WNCC squads return to action on Friday when they host McCook Community College in their sub-region home openers. The women’s contest starts at 5:30 p.m. followed by the men’s game. Both can be heard on Double Q Country.

# 13 CREIGHTON GETS A BIG WIN OVER DRAKE

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Ethan Wragge matched career highs with 22 points and six 3-pointers and No. 13 Creighton got off to a blistering start on its way to a 91-61 victory over Drake on Tuesday night.

Doug McDermott added 16 points, Jahenns Manigat had 13 and Grant Gibbs 10 for the Bluejays (15-1, 4-0 Missouri Valley Conference), who won their ninth straight game.

Creighton has won 71 straight against opponents .500 or worse, and it was apparent early that the streak was in no jeopardy. The Bluejays, who made a season-high 16 3-pointers, led by 30 points in the first half and by 35 late in the second.

Joey King scored 17 points and Jordan Clarke and Micah Mason had 11 apiece for Drake (6-9, 0-4).

BIG COMMERCIALS, BIG CONCERT FOR SUPER BOWL XLVII

NEW YORK (AP) – What can $4 million buy you? A 30-second spot during the Super Bowl. That’s the top price ads have been going for. It’s a half million dollars more than last year. Advertisers aren’t blinking an eye. All the commercial time is sold out. They figure they’ll get their money’s worth. More than 111 million people watched last year.

Between those expensive commercials–and a football game–Beyonce will perform at halftime, but a CBS executive jokes that he really wanted Janet Jackson. She was the last woman to perform at halftime on CBS and we all know what happened then. Les Moonves can laugh about her wardrobe malfunction now. The Supreme Court decided last summer not to consider reinstating the government’s $550,000 fine against CBS.

WNCC SPLITS GAMES AT NORTHWEST KANSAS TECHNICAL

Gritt Ryder

GOODLAND, Kan. — The Western Nebraska Community College men’s and women’s basketball teams kicked off the new year with a split of contests on Monday against Northwest Kansas Technical College in Kansas.  The Lady Cougars took an easy 88-52 victory, while the men suffered a tough 77-76 loss in overtime.

The women’s game was all Cougars. After the two squads were tied early at 9-9, the Cougars went on a 19-2 run to lead 28-11 before leading 55-25 at halftime.  WNCC quickly put the game away with a 21-point run that pushed the lead to 78-29 and the Cougars never looked back.

Gritt Ryder led the way with 14 points followed by Ashley Stevens with 13 while Jessica Aratani and Mikayla Brower each chipped 12 and Shalisa Moffit 11. Michelle Brassard  had a near double-figure night with 9 points.

It’s the third straight win for WNCC since the NJCAA ordered the first 13 games of the season, all victories, to be forfeited for using an ineligible player. The school’s appeal of the ruling is continuing, and WNCC remains eligible for the regional and national tournaments.

The WNCC men, after getting two clutch 3-pointers by Trey Moore and Rich Williams in the waning seconds of regulation and overtime, fell to the Mavericks 77-76 in an extra 5-minute period. It was the second time the two squads have gone to overtime. WNCC won the first encounter back on Dec. 7, 96-85.

The men’s contest was a tight-knit contest from the get-go. WNCC led 32-29 in the fading seconds of the first half, but Northwest Kansas hit a deep 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 33-32 halftime lead.

The lead changed hands several times in the second half  with Northwest up 68-65 when Trey Moore forced overtime as he hit a 3-pointer with 2-seconds left.

The Cougars fell behind 74-69 in the extra period when Northwest hit back-to-back 3-pointers, but WNCC tied the game with 50-seconds left on a try by Rich Williams. Neither team could score again until Northwest’s Gian Clavell made  one of two free throws with 4-seconds to play for the win.

WNCC coach Russ Beck was pleased with how hard his team played while short-handed and kept fighting until the end.

“We turned the ball over too much and we gave up too many offensive rebounds,” he said. “However, we were scrappy and really competed. We had guys step up and hit huge shots. I was proud of the guys and we need to stay positive and continue to get better.”

Both WNCC teams open South Sub-Region play Tuesday at Lamar Community College. The Sub-Region home openers for both Cougars teams will be Friday at McCook Community College.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP – ALABAMA VS NOTRE DAME

MIAMI (AP) — Which team do you like, Notre Dame or Alabama?

The battle lines are drawn for tonight’s BCS Championship at Sun Life Stadium in Miami. Notre Dame, the top-ranked team with a 12-0 mark, has the distinction of being a fairly heavy underdog against 12-1 Alabama. Oddsmakers are rating the Crimson Tide about a 9-point favorite, largely based on Alabama’s team speed and swarming defense.

Alabama is going for its third national championship in four years and trying to become the first school to win back-to-back BCS titles. Notre Dame is seeking its first national championship since 1988.

Notre Dame’s strength is its stifling defense, which has allowed only two rushing touchdowns all season. The Crimson Tide has a pair of 1,000 yards rushers in Eddie Lacy and freshman T.J. Yeldon, who combined for 334 yards in a 32-28 victory over Georgia in the Southeastern Conference championship game.

Notre Dame has surrendered only 92.4 yards per game on the ground, and just two players rushed for more than 100 yards against the Irish. LB Manti Te’o leads the team in tackles (103) and interceptions (seven).

This game matches two of the most storied programs in college grid history. The teams first met in the 1973 Sugar Bowl, a classic matchup in which Notre Dame claimed its second national title under coach Ara Parseghian with a 24-23 victory over Bear Bryant and the Crimson Tide. Their last meeting was in 1987, when Notre Dame romped to a 37-6 victory in South Bend.
