CSC FB TO OPEN WITH 2 THURS NIGHT GAMES, ONE AT COWBOY STADIUM

CSC Eagles Logo _ Sports 2012CHADRON – The Chadron State College football team will open the 2013 season with a pair of road night games, including a stop at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the first two weeks of the 2013 season, head coach Jay Long said Thursday.

The Eagles, who qualified for the NCAA Division II Playoffs and ended the 2012 season as the No. 18th ranked team in the country, will play at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, Mo., Thursday, Sept. 5.

Chadron State will then play West Texas A&M, the team who eliminated the Eagles in the playoffs in 2012, in a non-conference game at Cowboys Stadium Thursday, Sept. 12.

“We are extremely excited for our schedule,” Long said. “We start the season off with two teams who finished the season ranked in the top 25 and we get the opportunity to play in Cowboys Stadium. I really feel our non-conference schedule will prepare us for our RMAC games and the team is excited to have five important games at home.”

The Eagles’ game at Missouri S&T kicks off at 6:30, while the game against West Texas A&M begins at 7.

Missouri S&T went 10-1 in 2012 and ended the season ranked 24th in the country but did not qualify for the playoffs. West Texas A&M, which advanced to the national semifinals, compiled a 12-3 record and finished ranked fourth.

Following the two non-conference games, Chadron State will begin its nine game Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule.

In all, the Eagles will host five home games, beginning with the Family Day game against Colorado Mesa scheduled for Sept. 21 and Homecoming Oct. 5th against Adams State.

The Eagles’ other home games are Colorado State University-Pueblo…the 2-time defending RMAC champion ranked 6th in last year’s final poll after being #1 much of the year…on Oct 12, New Mexico Highlands (Oct. 26) and Fort Lewis (Nov. 9).

Chadron State will play Western State, Black Hills State, Western New Mexico and Colorado School of Mines on the road.

WNCC MEN FALL TO PLAINSMEN

WNCC_Cougar _ 250 Pixels              STERLING, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College played flat in suffering a 75-62 defeat to Northeastern Junior College Tuesday at Sterling, Colo.

The Cougars, who registered a big win against Casper College on Saturday, was battling from behind in the game against the Plainsmen. NJC led at halftime 35-27. NJC led by as much as 15 points midway in the second half, 61-46.

The Cougar cut the deficit to 10 points at one stretch, but couldn’t get anything closer in dropping the South Sub-Region contest.

“We came out flat and played flat for 35 minutes,” WNCC coach Russ Beck said. “We did not communicate on defense and we turned the ball over way too much on offense. Until we can show up defensively every game we will not win consistently. Right now we win when we shoot well and lose when we don’t”

The Cougars were led in scoring by Charles Ward with 18 points followed by Quante Cooley with 10 points. Sebastian Suarez also chipped in nine points, while Zach Clemens had seven points.

WNCC (105, 8-12) will be back in action Thursday when they travel to face Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne, Wyo., in another sub-region contest. They will then head to North Platte on Saturday to face sub-region leading North Platte Community College on Saturday. North Platte defeated McCook Community College 63-47 Tuesday night.

WNCC will then return home to face Lamar Community College and Northeastern Junior College on Feb. 8 and 9.

HUSKERS LOSE DESPITE 30 FROM GALLEGOS

Ray Gallegos
Ray Gallegos

Minneapolis, Minn. – Despite a career-high 30 points from Ray Gallegos, the Nebraska men’s basketball team fell to No. 23 Minnesota, 84-65, Tuesday night at Williams Arena.

Gallegos became the first Husker since 2008 to score 30 points in a game, topping his previous high of 22 set at UTEP on Dec. 22, as the junior guard recorded his fourth 20-point game of the season. Gallegos went 12-of-17 from the field, including six 3-pointers to match his career high.

Unfortunately for the Huskers (11-11, 2-7 Big Ten), Minnesota put three players in double figures, led by 23 from Rodney Williams and shot 54.2 percent from the floor, becoming only the second Husker opponent in 2012-13 to shoot above 50 percent. Williams hit 8-of-13 shots from the floor, while the Gophers, who improved to 16-5 and snapped a four-game losing streak, converted 16 offensive rebounds in 20 points.

Both teams shot lights out in the first half, as Minnesota took a 44-35 halftime lead. Nebraska shot 63.6 percent from the field in the first half, as Gallegos had 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. Minnesota, which hit 10 of its first 13 shots, shot 55 percent from the floor while also turning seven offensive boards into 10 points.

Williams got Minnesota going early as the senior forward had six of the Gophers first seven points before Gallegos’ jumper got the Huskers on the scoreboard. Williams had 12 of his 19 first-half points in the first 8:20, as the Gophers built an early 23-8 lead.

Gallegos keyed the Husker comeback, hitting three 3-pointers as part of a 10-2 run to pull the Huskers within 25-18 with 8:40 left in the half. Minnesota responded moments later with a 5-0 run before another Gallegos 3-pointer ended the run. Nebraska trailed 38-25 before Shavon Shields ran off five straight points, hitting a three-point play and a layup to make it an eight point game. NU cut the lead to seven twice in the final two minutes, the last being on Gallegos jumper for his 20th point of the half to make it 42-35 before Andre Hollins’ bucket with a second left pushed the lead to nine.

In the second half, the Huskers pulled to within 48-40 after a Shavon Shields’ 3-pointer with 16:53 left, but Andre Hollins keyed an 10-2 Gopher spurt with six straight points, including a 3-pointer to take a 58-42 lead after Joe Coleman layup with 12:30 left. Nebraska pulled to within 60-47 after a Ubel 3-pointer with 11:28 left, but could not get any closer, as 3-pointers from Austin Hollins and Joe Coleman stretched the lead back to 16, and NU was unable to cut into the Gophers’ advantage the rest of the way.

Brandon Ubel and Shields joined Gallegos in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Nebraska returns to action Saturday night, as the Huskers take on Ohio State. Tipoff is at 6 p.m.

WNCC WOMEN STAY UNBEATEN IN SUB-REGION PLAY

WNCC WBB        STERLING, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team buried 12 3-pointers in staying unbeaten in South Sub-Region play with a commanding 85-45 win over Northeastern Junior College Tuesday in Sterling, Colo.

Mikayla Brower led the way for the Cougars, popping in 23 points. The Torrington High graduate sizzled from the 3-point arc, nailing five of six 3-pointers.

Brower was just one of many Cougars that had the hot hand from long range. Kelsey Doddridge sank three 3-pointers to finish with 13 points, while Gritt Ryder, Laurin Rivera Simone Evans, and Shalisa Moffit each had one trey.

Ryder finished with 15 points, seven rebounds and four steals in the game.

Brower said the team played well both offensively and defensively on the night.

“We played like we have been, like we played in the first semester,” she said. “We went back to playing as a team and the way we know how to play.”

The team’s shooting was definitely on and Brower said that fine shooting is contributed by extra work in the gym.

“We have been going in the gym and shooting and I think that is showing,” she said. “It really helps us to get in the gym because it helps us confidence.”

Defense was what really set the stage for the Cougars in the win. WNCC trailed early at 9-2, but went on a 13-2 run to lead 15-11 and never trailed again. The Cougars took a 41-27 lead at halftime.

In the second half, the Cougars were even more intense on defense, holding NJC to just 18 second-half points, including an early 8-0 run to go up by 20 points, 49-29 on a Brower 3-pointer.

Later, the Cougars went on a 14-0 run to lead by 31 points at 78-37 as Ryder had five straight points with Moffit capping the run with a 3-pointer.

Brower said the defense was key tonight.

“He told us to be a strong defense and play solid,” she said. “We helped each other out, got our hands up, and that is what it took.”

WNCC moved to 6-0 in the South Sub-Region and have won 10 straight since having to forfeit games first semester. Still, the Cougars are winning through all the adversity they have faced. Brower said that is the mark of a good team.

“It really doesn’t matter how tall you are; it is how passionate that you play,” Brower said. “Right know we playing as one heart and doing well. It is really showing.”

WNCC will next be in action on Feb. 8-9 when they host Lamar Community College and Northeastern Junior College in sub-region tilts.

2013 PRO BOWL – NFC WINS BIG

Pro Bowl

HONOLULU (AP) — Last year, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell threatened to get rid of the Pro Bowl following a lackadaisical performance by both teams.

Things weren’t much better at this year’s All-Star game, with the NFC blowing out the AFC 62-35. Minnesota tight end Kyle Rudolph was voted the game’s MVP with five catches for 122 yards and a touchdown.

The boys game was a back-and-forth affair that was tight throughout. It was tied at the end of the first quarter 9-9, but Chadron had narrow leads of 17-13 at the half and 32-29 going into the fourth quarter before Douglas came back to grab the win.

The difference came at the foul line with Douglas holding off the Cardinals by making key free throws down the stretch as they went 17-18 on the night.

The Patriots were led in scoring by Matt Vinson with 25 points, but Chadron’s Spencer Eliason claimed game honors with 26.
