WNCC MEN FALL AT LCCC 74-68

WNCC coach Russ Beck

CHEYENNE, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team held a halftime lead over Laramie County Community College Thursday night, but they couldn’t keep the lead as the Golden Eagles came back for a 74-68 win in a South Sub-Region contest.

The Cougars shot lights out in the first half, burying 52 percent of their shots, while holding the Golden Eagles to 30 percent in holding a 29-26 halftime lead.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said they had a good first half.

“We played a good first half but in this game they do not give out partial wins,” he said. “They outscored us 12 to 4 in the first three minutes of the second half erasing our three-point lead. Eighteen costly turnovers turned into points for Laramie County. It’s too late in the year to be coughing up the ball like we do.”

Beck said they just did to dig deep to get back on the winning track.

“We need to find a way and be willing to work hard to dig ourselves out of this rut,” he said. “It’s time to dig deep.”

The second half was a different story as LCC shot 60 percent and converted 15 of 23 free throws. WNCC shot just 30 percent but also made 15 of 19 free throws. The difference was the Golden Eagles made four more field goals than the Cougars as both teams were rather even statistically.

LCCC out-rebounded WNCC 38-34 and had just three fewer turnovers than WNCC. The difference was the play of Ude Ifeanyichukwu, who tallied nine blocks. Ifeanyichukwu, however, wasn’t a factor scoring, finishing with no points.

The Golden Eagles put three players in double figures, led by Julian Chiera with 22 points, including a perfect 7 of 7 from the foul line. Deshon Portley chipped in 19 points, while Germain Decosta had a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds.

WNCC got another outstanding effort from Charles Ward, who finished with a game-high 27 points. Ward, a sophomore from Phoenix, converted 14 of 17 free throws. Quante Cooley was the only other Cougar in double figures with 12 points.

The Cougars will be back in action on Saturday against sub-region leading North Platte Community College before returning home Feb. 8 and 9 to host Lamar Community College and Northeastern Junior College.

WNCC                   29 39 – 68

LCCC                      26 48 – 74

WNCC

Hahir Little 2, Zach Clemens 8, Quante Cooley 12, Rich Williams 5, Trey Moore 2, Charles Ward 27, Sebastian Suarez 2, Cody Johnson 8, Chad Calcaterra 2.

Jordan Hooper - OSUColumbus, Ohio – Jordan Hooper erupted for 28 points and seven rebounds to lead the Nebraska women’s basketball team to a 62-53 win over Ohio State at Value City Arena on Thursday night.

With the victory, Nebraska improved to 15-6 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten, while Ohio State slipped to 11-10 overall and 1-7 in the conference. The Huskers notched their third Big Ten road win and recorded their first-ever win at Value City Arena.

Hooper hit 5-of-9 three-pointers in the game and 10-of-21 shots overall from the field to lead all scorers with 28 points while adding seven rebounds, two assists and a steal. The 6-2 junior forward from Alliance, Neb., scored 12 of NU’s 14 points in a six-minute span late in the second half. She hit three straight short jumpers to turn a 56-49 lead into a 62-49 edge with 3:24 left.

Senior Lindsey Moore added 11 points and six assists, including eight points in the second half. The 5-9 point guard from Covington, Wash., hit three three-pointers on the night.

Sophomore Emily Cady added 10 points and six rebounds, while freshman Rachel Theriot contributed nine points, five rebounds and six assists. Theriot got four rebounds in the final six minutes, including a pair of offensive rebounds that she turned into points for the Huskers to seal the win.

Nebraska finished the game with 43.6 percent (24-55) shooting, including 36 percent (9-25) from three-point range. The Huskers were also a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line, but did not shoot a free throw in the second half as OSU was only whistled for five fouls in the game. NU also won the turnover battle 16-13, but were outrebounded 36-29. The Huskers managed just six offensive rebounds, but turned them into 11 second-chance points, while Ohio State got just four second-chance points on 11 offensive boards.

Senior guard Tayler Hill led Ohio State with 22 points, five rebounds and six assists, but went 0-for-5 from three-point range. As a team, Ohio State went just 1-for-13 from long range, missing its first 11 attempts from beyond the arc. Nebraska outscored the Buckeyes 27-3 from long range on OSU’s homecourt.

Ohio State shot just 38.2 percent (21-55) from the floor for the game, but did hit 10-of-11 free throws. Ashley Adams helped the Buckeyes with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Aleksandra Dobranic scored all seven of her points in the second half, including OSU’s only three-pointer to keep the Buckeyes within striking distance.

Nebraska led from start to finish in a game, but Coach Connie Yori was not ever comfortable with the Husker margin.

“That was anything but pretty,” Yori said. “It’s good that we hit some shots or else I don’t know how we would have won. We did some good things in the first half, but the game just seemed like it was moving in slow motion. They got all the hustle plays in the first 15 minutes of the second half, until Rachel finally got some rebounds for us, and Hooper hit some shots to put it away.”

Nebraska took a 34-24 lead to the locker room at halftime thanks to 16 first-half points from Hooper, who scored seven straight points in a 1:35 span to fuel an 11-0 NU run to give the Huskers their biggest lead at 34-21.

NU hit 5-of-13 three-pointers including 3-of-6 shooting by Hooper. The Huskers were 12-of-30 overall from the field. Nebraska also won the turnover battle 10-5. NU was outrebounded 20-15 in the opening half, but the Huskers got seven second-chance points while OSU went scoreless off its second chances.

Theriot added seven points, including a game-opening three-pointer in her return to her home state, to go along with three first-half assists. Cady pitched in six first-half points.

The Big Ten’s leading scorer, Hill led OSU with 12 points, but the Buckeyes went 0-for-7 from three-point range and just 9-of-26 from the field. Adams added eight first-half points.

The Huskers return home to the Devaney Center to continue Big Ten action on Sunday, when they play host to Minnesota. Tip-off against the Golden Gophers is set for 2:05 p.m. on Pepsi Pack the House Day at the Devaney Center. Fans can purchase general admission tickets for just $1 and 24-ounce Pepsi products will be on sale for just $1 at the concession stands. Fans are encouraged to participate in National Wear Red Day to support women’s heart health. The game will also feature the FM Acro dunk team at halftime. Tickets are available now at Huskers.com.

The Regis women are 7-10 overall and 6-7 in the RMAC. They downed the Eagles 73-49 during the game in Denver on Dec. 15, when the Rangers’ top gun, 6-1 senior Sarah Feeney, scored 21 points. She’s averaging 14.3 points and 6.3 rebounds. Tae’lor Purdy, a 5-10 junior, is next on the scoring list at 13.5 points a game.

David Downey

CHADRON – The Chadron State College men’s basketball team will host top-ranked Metro State on Friday and Regis University Saturday in a pair of Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games. Both games will begin at 8 p.m.

Metro State is 17-0 and ranked #1 in NCAA Division II. The Roadrunners are outscoring their opponents by more than 21 points a game…81.6 to 60.9-point margin..and only two of their wins have been by fewer than 12 points: 71-65 over #17 Fort Lewis on Jan. 19 and  75-70 over Western State last Saturday night in Gunnison.

The Roadrunners bested the Eagles 82-50 in Denver on Dec. 16, but CSC was without the services of leading scorer Zac Bargen, who was out with an ankle injury.

Bargen is tied for the lead among RMAC men in scoring at 18.4 points a game and is 1st in the league in free throws attempted and 2nd in fts made per game, sinking 91 of 108 shots for 84.3%.

Four Roadrunners are averaging in double-figures, led by 5-foot-9 guard Brandon Jefferson, who is shooting 52.5 percent from the field while averaging 16.8 points.

Two more guards, Mitch McCarron and Demetrius Miller, are averaging 14.3 points while the team’s big man, 6-8 Jonathan Morse, is averaging 13.3 points and 9.3 rebounds.

Regis is 5-11 for the season and 4-9 in the conference. The Eagles got their only victory of the season, 71-62, when they beat the Rangers on Dec. 15 in Denver.

Jarrett Green, a 6-1 junior, is pacing Regis in scoring at 11.7 points a game.

FORMER HUSKER SCOTT FROST NEW OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR AT OREGON

Scott Frost       The University of  Oregon has promoted former Nebraska QB Scott Frost to offensive coordinator, replacing Mark Helfrich, who moved up to head coach when Chip Kelly left for the NFL as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Frost’s move up had been widely expected.

The 38-year-old Frost…who will also be the QBs coach…has coached WRs for the Ducks the past 4 years after spending time as defensive coordinator at Northern Iowa. He was a graduate assistant at both Nebraska under Frank Solich and Kansas State under Ron Prince.

A high school star at Wood River, Frost began his college career at Stanford but transferred to Nebraska and led the Huskers to the 1997 national championship. He then spent 6 years in the NFL as a safety.
