NORTH PLATTE CC BOMBS WNCC, 100-69

WNCC_Cougar _ 250 Pixels NORTH PLATTE — The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team put five players in double figures but it wasn’t enough to stop a North Platte Community College team that connected on 13 3-pointers in falling to the Knights 100-69 Saturday in North Platte in a South Sub-Region contest.

The Knights (18-4, 8-2 Region IX) shot the ball extremely well in the contest, connecting on 54 percent from the field, including making 56 percent of their shots from behind the arc (13 of 23).

WNCC didn’t shoot the ball that badly either, making 47 percent of their shots. The Cougars were also 41 percent from beyond the arc and connected on 72.7 percent from the free throw line.

WNCC coach Russ Beck said it was a matter that North Platte was fired up after the Cougars had swept them  last year. “We played without heart and without pride,” he said. “We can drill and practice and grind everyday but if we turn it over 22 times and don’t defend, we are in for it.”

Turnovers played a role in the Knights’ victory. North Platted forced 22 turnovers and turned them into 27 points.  The bright spot for the Cougars was their bench, where they outscored North Platte’s bench 43-22.

Sebastian Suarez paced the Cougars off the bench with 14 points, including two 3-pointers. Also netting double digits for WNCC were Tahir Little and Charles Ward with 12 points, Zach Clemens with 11, and Cody Johnson with 10.

North Platte was led in scoring by Ethan Montalvo with 23 points. Reath Jiech contributed 16 points and seven rebounds, while Ben Wilson had 16 points and eight rebounds. Damon Brown also had double digits with 14 points.

WNCC will be back in action next weekend when they host Lamar Community College on Friday and Northeastern Junior College on Saturday.

EAGLES HOLD OFF REGIS FOR 2ND WIN

Kendrick Holliman

CHADRON – The Chadron State College men’s basketball team got its second win of the season and in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play Saturday night at Armstrong Gymnasium as the Eagles fought off pesky Regis, 72-61.

The Eagles first home victory broke a 9-game losing streak since beating Regis in Denver before Christmas.

The back-and-forth game had 10 ties and 7 lead changes. CSC was up 37-34 at intermission and built a 9-point lead in the second half, only to see Regis tie the score at 61 with just over 3:00 to go.

It was all CSC after that, as they finished the game on an 11-0 run with Zac Bargen getting 8 of them. Bargen nailed his only 3 of the game with 1:53 remain to give the Eagles the lead, then followed that up with a tough layup to make it 66-61.

Justyn Anderson continued the run with 1-2 from the foul line, Bargen came back with  3-4 free throws, and Kendrick Holliman capped the scoring with his third dunk of the night with 13-seconds remaining.

The Eagles led 37-34 at halftime and used some stifling defense in the second half to limit the Rangers to 39 percent shooting.

For the game, Chadron State took care of the basketball – the Eagles committed just 11 turnovers – and shot 50 percent from the floor.

Bargen led the Eagles with 22 points on 7 of 13 shooting.  Anderson chipped in 10 and Kyle Vinich finished with nine for the Eagles. The Rangers (6-12, 5-10 RMAC) were led by Kevin Marshall, who scored 17, and Jon Conley with 14.

The Eagles  (2-17, 2-13 RMAC) next travel to a pair of Colorado schools as they visit Western State in Gunnison on Friday and Grand Junction on Saturday to meet Colorado Mesa.

CHADRON – The Regis women scored 31 points off 24 Chadron State turnovers and limited the Eagles to 3-21 on 3-pointers in taking a 76-57 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference win Saturday in Chadron.

While CSC struggled to hang on the ball and make long shots, the Rangers, now 8-11 for the season and 7-8 in the RMAC, excelled in both areas…making 10 of 24 treys and committing just 4 turnovers.

Regis built a 33-20 halftime lead, saw the Eagles cut the margin to 6 with about 13-1/2 minutes to play, then outscored CSC 26-8 over the next 8:00 to cruise to the victory.

Four players did a bulk of the Rangers’ scoring. Tae’lor Purdy finished with 22 points, including 4-7 from 3-point range after coming in shooting just 26% from long-range.

Sarah Feeney had 17 while Erica Von Stein and Miranda Martine came off the bench to tally 13 and 10 points, respectively. Von Stein had just 17 points on the season before the game while shooting 5-24 from the field and 5-22 from 3-point range, but was 4-7 overall and 3-6 from long-range against the Eagles.

Chadron State was led by 6-foot junior Kattie Ranta, who scored 19 points on 8-12 shooting and grabbed a game-high 8 rebounds. Both Kate Simonton and Sadie Waugh added 8 points…Waugh with 8 rebounds as well as the Eagles won the battle of the boards 43-24.

Chadron State is now 3-16 overall and 3-12 in the conference. They head back on the road to Colorado next week with games Friday in Gunnison against Western State and Saturday against Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction.

CSC PLAYS #1 METRO STATE TOUGH, BUT FALLS

Grant Stone

CHADRON – Chadron State gave #1 ranked Metro State all it could handle Friday at Armstrong Gymnasium, but  in the end, it wasn’t enough as the Roadrunners took a 63-51 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss.

Metro State (17-0, 13-0 RMAC) has beaten all but two opponents by double-digits this year and built a 15 margin on the Eagles with 7:34 to go, but CSC cut the deficit to only 3 with just under 4:00 remaining before Metro pulled away down the stretch. The 12 win matches their third-closest game this season.

Preseason Conference Player of the Year Jonathon Morse led Metro State with 16 points on five of 10 shooting with four rebounds. Morse was the only Metro State player to finish in double digits.

Chadron State was led by Grant Stone, who finished with 11 points, including three 3-point field goals. Zac Bargen and Kyle Vinich chipped in with 10 points apiece,  David Downey added 9 and Justyn Anderson had a team-high 3 assists.

Chadron State concludes a 4-game home stand tonight (Saturday) against Regis University, the only team they’ve beaten this year. Tip-off is schedule for 8 p.m.

ST THOMAS MORE GIRLS BEAT CHADRON AGAIN, CARDINAL BOYS FALL TOO

The St Thomas More boys and girls basketball teams made the trip Rapid City to Chadron Friday night a successful on as they swept the Cardinals…taking the girls game 59-43 and the boys game 53-32.

The girls game was a rematch of two highly ranked teams in their respective states, but failed to live up to that lofty billing as the Lady Cavaliers dominated Chadron just as they had in handing the Cardinals their only other loss of the eason in January.

St Thomas More led start to finish. They were up 16-9 at the end of the first quarter, then blitzed the Lady Cardinals 19-8 to take an 18 point lead into the locker room. It was 51-31 through three quarters, but Chadron did trim the final margin against the reserves.

The Lady Cavaliers had two players who combined to outscore the entire Chadron team 45-43 as Ciara Duffy finished with 26 and Alexys Swedlund 19.

Chadron had 3 players in double figures…Ashlea Kerr with 15, her twin sister Bailea with 12, and Peyton Hinn with 11 points including a buzzer beating 3-pointer to end the first half. 17-2 Chadron plays another South Dakota team Saturday night, traveling to Pine Ridge to meet Red Cloud.

The Chadron-St Thomas More boys game was decided early as the Cavaliers jumped out to a 17-2 lead after a quarter. The Cardinals trimmed the deficit to 11 at the half 26-15, but St Thomas More outscored them 21-11 in the third period to put the game away.

The Cavaliers…who made 10 treys on the night…had balanced scoring with just 2 players in double digits, Jeron Laurenti with 17 and Jacob Henderson with 12.

Spencer Eliason accounted for almost 60% of Chadron’s points with 19 and added 8 rebounds for good measure. The Cardinals are off until next Friday when they play at Sidney.

CSC WRESTLERS DROP FINAL 6 MATCHES TO LOSE AT ADAMS STATE

CSC Eagles Logo _ Sports 2012ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Chadron State wrestling team jumped out to a quick 15-3 last night at Adams State in Alamosa, Colo, but the Grizzlies took the final 6 matches and cruised to a 31-15  Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory during their dual Friday night in Alamosa, Colo.

The Eagles fall to 5-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference while Adams State, which has defeated Chadron State in 11 consecutive duals, improves to 6-3 overall and 4-1 in the conference.

Adams State’s Jarrod Purvis, the No. 8 ranked wrestler at 174 pounds, got the dual started off right for the Grizzlies by earning a 6-3 decision over Devan Fors, but the responded with three straight victories.

Jordan Debus pinned Mark Mabry at 184, Chris Leak followed with a forfeit at 197 and Mike Hill gutted out a 4-2 decision in overtime over Taylor Stam at heavyweight to put Chadron State up 15-3.

Things quickly went downhill after that as Adams State scored bonus points in 5 of the final 6 matches with 2 pins, 2 major decisions, and a technical fall.

Chadron State will be back out on the road for their next action as they wrestle at Dickinson State on Wednesday.

CHADRON – Eight Metro State women’s basketball players scored at least six points and the Roadrunners sank eight 3-pointers en route to their 76-40 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory over Chadron State Friday at Armstrong Gymnasium.

Metro, now 13-6 overall and 11-3 in the conference, plays tonight (Saturday) at Black Hills State while the Eagles (3-15, 3-11 RMAC) host Regis University at 6 p.m.

Chadron State never led and tied the game just once at 2-2. Metro State didn’t have any big scoring runs, but just kept pushing the margin until it was 36-20 at the half. It was more of the same after intermission, when the Eagles shot just 29% and went scoreless for the final 4:47 when they had 5 turnovers and 2 missed shots.
