MUSICIANS GATHER TO HELP SANDY VICTIMS

NEW YORK (AP) – Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel and Jon Bon Jovi cranked out their hits as part of NBC’s benefit concert for victims of Superstorm Sandy. Springsteen closed Friday’s telecast with “Land of Hope and Dreams.” Mary J. Blige broke into tears singing “The Living Proof.” Steven Tyler performed “Dream On.” Christina Aguilera sang “Beautiful,” and Sting sent “an SOS to the world” with “Message in a Bottle.” Jimmy Fallon led an all-star singalong of “Under the Boardwalk.” Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross. ABC plans on doing a “Day of Giving” across various shows today. CBS and Fox have announced donations to the Red Cross.

NOTE TO AEROSMITH: IF YOU TELL PEOPLE WHERE IT IS, IT ISN’T REALLY A “SURPRISE” CONCERT

Aerosmith have let it slip where they’ll play their surprise concert at noon in Boston today. It will be in front of 1325 Commonwealth Avenue, where the band lived from 1970 to 1972. Players from the New England Patriots and some of the cheerleaders will be there too. The concert is to mark the release of the new Aerosmith album, “Music From Another Dimension,” out tomorrow. It’s also a nonpartisan get-out-the-vote party.

JASON’S YOUTUBE FLASHBACK! 11/2/12

On this date in 1968, the single “For Once In My Life” by Stevie Wonder was released.  The tune has been recorded in a variety of styles by a variety of artists.  Here’s a great low-key duet of the song from Wonder and legendary vocalist Tony Bennett:

SPRINGSTEEN: “JERSEY WILL REBOUND” FROM SUPERSTORM

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - New Jersey rocker Bruce Springsteen says his home state will rebound from the devastation of Superstorm Sandy.

Springsteen and his band played to an adoring crowd at the Jordan Center on the Penn State University campus in State College on Thursday night. He thanked New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie for "doing a fine job" of taking care of citizens. He also lauded police, firefighters and other first responders.

He then launched into an extended, heart-wrenching rendition of his song "My City of Ruins."

On Wednesday night, Springsteen and the E Street Band performed in the upstate New York town of Rochester, a concert that had been postponed from Tuesday because of travel difficulties caused by the storm.

Springsteen will join NBC's planned benefit concert Friday for victims of the storm.

JASON’S YOUTUBE FLASHBACK! 11/1/12

Greetings Post readers!  KCOW “Wakeup Show” host Jason Wentworth here.  Each weekday I’ll be posting a retro YouTube video from the 50s thru 80s.  Since today is our big Launch Day for the new website, this hallmark of Saturday morning TV seems appropriate!

“WHO STOLE A MOVE FROM THE STONES?” “YES.” “WHO?” “THAT’S RIGHT.” “HUH?”

UNDATED (AP) – The windmill may be Pete Townshend’s signature move, but it’s really Keith Richards’ move. Townshend writes in his new autobiography, “Who I Am,” an early version of the band called The Detours opened for The Rolling Stones in December 1963. Townshend saw Richards swing his arms like a windmill to warm up. When they opened for The Stones a few weeks later, Richards didn’t do that, so Townshend adopted it for himself. A month or so later, they found out another band had the name The Detours, so they needed a new name. The name “The Who” came from future Who biographer Richard Barnes. Townshend himself wanted to call the band “The Hair.”

CHUCK BERRY’S STILL ALIVE? ARE YOU SURE? WELL, OKAY…

CLEVELAND (AP) – Chuck Berry’s advice to young performers: “keep rocking, keep rocking.” After that, he says, “Be kind to your fans.” Berry is following his own advice, because he’s hinting even though he’s 86, he’s still got some new music. He told reporters at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland Saturday he’s got six new songs, some written 16 years ago. He says the songs may be old but they’re the kind of songs he’s known for playing. Berry says he’ll release them as soon as he finds someone to guide him. Berry was given a tribute concert Saturday that included Ernie Isley of the Isley Brothers, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels of Run-DMC, Rick Derringer, David Johansen and Merle Haggard.
