Hemingford swept both team titles at the Chadron High School Invitational Track and Field Meet on Saturday. The host Cardinals were the runners-up in both team races.

Led by sophomore Brooke Turek, who won all three of the sprints and anchored the winning 4×100 relay, the Hemingford girls scored 179 points while Chadron tallied 132 points and Gordon-Rushville was third with 112.

The boys’ race was much closer, but the Bobcats swept all three of the relays to edge Chadron by a 197-190 margin.

Hemingford senior Ethan Skinner anchored two of Hemingford’s winning relay quartets and also set the meet’s only record while cracking the 50-second mark for the first time in the 400 meters.  His time of 49.7 seconds broke the old record of 50.7 that was set by Gordon-Rushville standout Garrett Shaal in 2007.

A current Gordon-Rushville athlete, senior Micah Scherbarth, pushed Skinner while completing the race in 50.1 seconds to also exceed the former record.

Skinner was second in the Class C 400 meters at the Nebraska State Meet last spring, then rushed for 2,685 yards and 47 touchdowns last fall while sparking the Bobcats to their Class D-1 state championship.

Besides Turek, another multiple winner for the Hemingford girls was Kaelie Nelson, who won both the 800 and 3200. Gordon-Rushville’s Shaniah Freeseman won both the long and triple jumps.

Chadron standout Jackson Dickerson won both the 100 and long jump to become the only boy to win more than one event.
