THE SOUND OF NERD BRAINS EXPLODING: R2D2 WAS IN THE LAST “STAR TREK” MOVIE

LAS VEGAS (AP) – Here’s a reason to go back and look closely at the last “Star Trek” movie directed by J.J. Abrams.

Advance the film frame by frame during a scene showing space junk and you might notice R2D2 hiding there. That revelation is as close as Abrams came to talking about “Star Wars” at a video game conference in Las Vegas.

Abrams will be directing the next installment of the “Star Wars” franchise.

EVEN THOUGH ‘IDOL’ PRODUCERS PRE-FORM THE COMBOS, “GROUP NIGHT” STILL BRINGS THE DRAMA

American Idol

LOS ANGELES (AP) – There’s a new wrinkle to “American Idol” this season. The producers form the groups for Hollywood Week. Unlike seasons past, there’s no scrambling to get into a group and no switching of groups. This week it’s the guys turn. Forty-three made it through last night and that number will be thinned to 20 on tonight’s show. Micah (MY’-cah) Johnson, who developed a speech impediment after a botched tonsillectomy, makes it. So does the turban-wearing “Turbinator.” But young Kayden Stephenson doesn’t advance. He’s the teen who suffers from cystic fibrosis, and may only live to age 35.

MORE ‘STAR WARS’ MOVIES COMING

star_wars_logo_640_large_verge_medium_landscape

LOS ANGELES (AP) – Disney is mining The Force for even more new films.

Disney CEO Bob Iger says screenwriters Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are working on standalone “Star Wars” movies that aren’t part of the planned new trilogy. Iger told CNBC on yesterday that the standalone movies will be based on “great ‘Star Wars’ characters that are not part of the overall saga.” The films would be released during the six-year period of the new trilogy, starting in 2015 with “Star Wars: Episode VII.”

Disney confirmed last month that “Star Trek” director J.J. Abrams will direct the seventh installment of the “Star Wars” saga. Disney bought “Star Wars” maker Lucasfilm last year for more than $4 billion.

BYE-BYE IRON, HELLO KITTY: FACEBOOK USERS CHOOSE NEW MONOPOLY TOKEN

PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) – Scottie dog has a new nemesis after Monopoly fans voted to add a cat to the game and eliminate the iron token.

Toy maker Hasbro Inc. announced the changes Wednesday, hours after voting on Facebook closed, marking the first time that fans had a say on which token to eliminate and which piece to replace it.

The eight tokens identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935.

The online contest to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans.

The iron, wheelbarrow and shoe were neck and neck for elimination in the final hours of voting. Rhode Island-based Hasbro says fans from more than 120 countries voted in the Save Your Token Campaign.

The new token was chosen from these nominees by Facebook users. Of COURSE the cat won!

BEYONCE LEAVES MALE VIEWERS OVERHEATED, BUT THE POWER OUTAGE WASN’T HER FAULT!

Beyonce

NEW YORK (AP) – Beyonce’ did not blow out the lights at the Super Bowl. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell says the halftime show is not to blame for the power failure to the Superdome in the second half of the Super Bowl.

Doug Thornton of SMG, the company that manages the Superdome, says Beyonce’s show was running on its own generator. He says metered power consumption went down during halftime because the house lights were off.

CELEBS SOCIALIZE AT OSCAR LUNCHEON

An actual Oscar statuette to be presented during the 79th Annual Academy Awards sits in a display case in Hollywood

BEVERLY HILLS (AP) – More than 160 Oscar nominees got together for a fancy lunch and to share tips on how to stay calm on the big day. Jessica Chastain will rely on her friends and family. She says they’ll have breakfast together and play some “calming music with candles.” Bradley Cooper says he’ll be fine, it’s his date he’s worried about. Cooper is taking his mom. He says he expects to be calming her down the day of the Oscars.

More from the Oscar luncheon:

The last time Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for an Oscar, she picked a dress for comfort. This time, she says, she’s going for glamour. She says she’s going to “suck it up” and wear a corset. She’s also looking forward to the after-parties where “everybody just gets wasted and has a blast.” Lawrence attended the annual Oscar nominees luncheon. She’s up for “Silver Linings Playbook.”

Ben Affleck doesn’t think the best director category should be expanded to match the best picture category at the Oscars, even though he missed out on a nomination for “Argo.” He says he’ll leave that debate to “the Oscarologists.” This year there are nine best picture nominees, but only five best director nominees. He says he’s just glad to be part of “the big party.” “Argo” has seven nominations and Affleck is still eligible for a best picture Oscar, since he helped produce the movie. Affleck attended the annual Oscar nominees luncheon.

Amy Adams showed up for her interviews at the Oscar nominees luncheon by joking to reporters that they were interrupting her flirting with Bradley Cooper and Christoph Waltz. Then, while answering her first question, Adams heard “Because the Night Belongs to Lovers” in the background. The very married Adams joked that it seemed to be the theme of her lunch. Adams is nominated for best supporting actress for “The Master.”

Tim Burton showed up at the Oscar nominees luncheon with his left arm in a sling. He says he slipped and fell on the street in London. He says doctors put “a huge metal plate” in arm, making him “part bionic man.” Burton attended the annual Oscar nominees luncheon. His movie “Frankenweenie” is up for best animated feature.
