Dennis Ray Zajic, 65

zajic

Dennis Ray Zajic, 65, a lifelong resident of Hemingford, died Friday, May 5, 2017 at Box Butte General Hospital with his loving family and friends by his side after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Dennis was born in Alliance, Nebraska to Loren and Florence Zajic on January 3, 1952. He grew up on their family farm having many childhood adventures outside with his sister and cousins and enjoying his high school years with stories of mischief and fun. He met his California girl Nancy Roland. They were married on July 1, 1972 in Hemingford. Dennis graduated from Chadron State College in 1974 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

Forever a teacher and always an entrepreneur, Dennis taught at many rural schools and St. Agnes Academy until he had the opportunity to teach in his hometown as middle school science teacher at Hemingford High School. He taught there for 20 years and was assistant wrestling coach for several years. He was always known for his humorous antics, pranks with colleagues and mad science experiments in his classroom. He was a mentor and created a love for learning that will never be forgotten.

Dennis ran several businesses throughout his lifetime including being partial owner of the Hemingford Lumberyard, and at his passing still owned D & A Lawn Care & Treasured Grounds. Dennis opened Treasured Grounds one week after retiring from teaching in May of 2012. He loved his coffee shop, his team and his guests – always trying to create an experience that they would never forget. In 2013, he was named Entrepreneur of the Year by Box Butte Development Corporation.
Even with all of his hard work, Dennis always found time for the good stuff – rock & artifact hunting, going to garage sales, fishing, reading and spending time sipping on a cup of coffee with his sidekick Bruce Shaver and all their friends. One of the most important aspects of his life was the grandkids, traveling with Nancy thousands of miles over the years to their sports and school functions. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered for the impact he had on his community, friends, students and family.

Dennis is survived by his mother, Florence Zajic; his wife Nancy; his children Holly Zajic, Heidi Zajic Eckland (Justin), and Andrew Zajic (Rhonda Conklin); his grandchildren, Mitch, Zane & Mason Garner, Ezra & Hadley Eckland, Peyton, Elijah, Chloie & Zebulon Zajic; his sister, Marlene Snyder (Larry); nephews Evan Snyder (Christine, daughter June), Gage Snyder, Nicholas Snyder, Nathaniel Snyder (Ashley) & a large extended family. He was preceded in death by his father Loren Zajic.

A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, May 11, 2017 at the Multipurpose Hall located on the Box Butte County Fairgrounds.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his honor be made to Bobcats Beating Cancer or the Dennis Zajic Memorial Fund at the Hemingford Credit Union.

Barb became the Clerk of Court for Box Butte County in 1965, taking over the position from her father at the time of his death and a job she loved very much. On August 30, 1969 she married James Neil Miles and moved to Hiland, Wyoming and became a rancher’s wife for the next 20 years. Barb took on the job she loved the most, mother of her three children; she was very active in whatever her children were doing. In 1998 she returned to Alliance to work for Dayco and Parker Hannifin until her health forced her to retire in 2007. Barb loved to spend time with family, friends and her animals. She loved all children as if they were her own. She loved to gamble taking a yearly trip to Deadwood and to drink a good cup of coffee.

She will be dearly missed by her children Mary Margret Miles of Alliance, James Noah Miles and wife Megan of Hemingford, and Charles Stewart Miles and wife Sheri of rural Alliance; her three granddaughters, Dali Rae, Samantha Kelly, and Kail Grace; her brother, Michael of Pasadena Ca; sister-in-law Patsy Stewart of Colorado Springs, CO; and brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Cecelia Kasper of Riverton Wyoming along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Building the 2017 Home Show (Photo Gallery)

Saturday April 1st is a day to be wary of tricks.  But it’s also a great day to get out and have some fun!  The KCOW/Double Q Country Homeshow (Saturday 8:00am-3:00pm in the Alliance High School Commons Area) promises prize drawings, product demos, huge savings, great food and no tricks.  However, turning a school cafeteria into a busy, colorful, exciting show floor?  That’s a unique trick all its own.

In this photo gallery you’ll see some of our exhibitors in various stages of completion.  Every vendor and exhibitor moves their entire booth piece-by-piece into the Commons Area and spends the evening making their display look perfect.  All while participants in the Health Fair (8am to Noon Saturday) are doing the very same.  It’s exciting, crowded and just a little crazy!  Our Eagle radio team dedicates this photo gallery to the local businesses who give up a large portion of their weekend to make our Home Show something special!

Palomo Named Alliance Area Teacher of the Month

KCOW, Double Q Country, B94.7 and Panhandle Post have been honoring great panhandle teachers since the start of the school year–and our latest honoree is Alliance High School P.E. teacher Carlos Palomo!

Here is a quote from one of the nomination letters we received:

Coach Palomo is one of the best teachers you could possibly have! He has a lot of pride in what he does and is very understanding. He loves competition and he tries to motivate each and everyone of his students and he will always tell you that even though you want to give up you should just keep doing whatever you want to give up on because there are many good things in your future and you will succeed in life even when things get rough! He’s great and I would pick him to be the best teacher any day!

On the day of our visit Coach Palomo was keeping his students busy in the weight room, and we snapped some photos of his class with Eagle Radio Alliance/Chadron General Manager Olivia Hasenauer:
