COCKROACHES INVADE PARIS!

PARIS (AP) – The Rolling Stones announced a surprise “warm-up gig” in Paris, and within an hour the Champs Elysees was swarming with fans hoping to get satisfaction with one of the 350 tickets for the Thursday night show.

The (euro) 15 ($19.5) tickets, announced on the Rolling Stones Twitter account, came with strings attached: No more than two per person, names printed on them and IDs required at the door at the show intended as a prep for the band’s 50th anniversary arena shows in London and Newark, New Jersey.

Guitarist Ronnie Wood had said in an interview with NME this week that the Stones could play several small clubs, possibly under the name the Cockroaches, an alias they’ve used before.

The group has not played together live in five years.

KANSAS MAN TO FACE TRIAL IN FATAL LEXINGTON CRASH

LEXINGTON, Neb. (AP) – A Kansas man accused of being drunk and causing a fatal crash will stand trial in Nebraska.

North Platte television station KNOP-TV reports (https://bit.ly/RwA4GL) that 22-year-old Destry Swartz of Coats, Kan., waived his preliminary hearing on Monday, and his case was bound over to Dawson County District Court.

Swartz is charged with motor vehicular homicide, fleeing to avoid arrest and driving while drunk. He is being held on $500,000 bail.

The Nebraska State Patrol says Swartz was speeding away from a state trooper in Lexington on Oct. 9 when he ran a red light and slammed into a pickup driven by 68-year-old Ruben Maravilla-Cortes, of Lexington. Maravilla-Cortes died at the scene.

NORTHEAST NEBRASKA MAN GETS 18 MONTHS FOR STOMPING ON TEEN GIRL

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – A 43-year-old northeast Nebraska man has been given 18 months in prison for stomping on the head of a teenage girl.

A news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Deborah Gilg (gihlj) says Charles Phillips Jr., of Macy, was convicted of assault on a child resulting in substantial bodily injuries.

Phillips must serve three years of supervised release after he leaves federal custody and must pay restitution of nearly $1,200.

Gilg’s office says Phillips got into an argument with his girlfriend on April 2 last year. When the girlfriend’s 13-year-old daughter yelled at Phillips to leave her mother alone, Phillips cursed the girl and stomped on her head.

DROUGHT STRESS BLAMED FOR LINCOLN TREE DEATHS

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) – Lincoln officials are blaming drought stress for the deaths of more than 550 trees in Pioneers Park.

Most of them were mature white pines, planted 20 to 40 years ago.

The Lincoln Journal Star reports (https://bit.ly/Pu0WWf) that there were fears the trees had fallen victim to the pine wilt that’s been killing Scotch pines and some other pine species. White pines are generally thought to be resistant to pine wilt.

But officials have determined the trees died from drought stress.

The trees are being removed. Many likely will be replaced in spring during a volunteer planting event.
