The Alliance Spartans baseball team picked up three solid victories over the weekend in Sturgis, SD.
They began the tournament by blanking Buffalo, WY, 8-0, and followed that up with a 7-0 win over Cody, WY.
Jayden Holman, Andy Gomez, and Grant Freeze put in solid offensive performances in the two Friday games. Gaige Lehl and Darrin Bottger teamed up to allow only 3 hits and Lehl was credited with the win against Buffalo. Jayden Holman went the distance against Cody allowing 5 hits and striking out 16.
Day two of the tournament pitted the Spartans against Regina, Saskatchewan – Canada where they prevailed in a tight 6-4 game.
Jeff Heckman got the win striking out four and allowing 8 hits. Alliance had 8 hits in the game as well.
Day 3 of the tournament proved to be a tough one as the Spartans dropped a 9-5 decision to Piedmont, SD Post 311. Alliance fell behind early 8-1, but battled back to complete the tournament.
Isaac Burnham suffered the loss.
“This was a good week for us,” said head coach Scott Gullion. “We went 6 and 1 against some quality opponents. Our bats are starting to come around, our defense has remained solid, and our pitching has been very good.”
The Spartans will be at home against Chadron on Tuesday and Westco (Scottsbluff) on Wednesday with the Juniors leading off at 5 and the Seniors playing at 7:30. Tuesday night’s game will be Farmer/Rancher appreciation night and sponsored by New Alliance Bean and Grain Elevator, a Division of Westco .
Wednesday night’s game will be First Responders appreciation night and sponsored by Sam and Louie’s New York Style Pizza.
Both Senior games will be broadcast on KCOW.
