Technology Report
All student laptops(487) were returned by AHS students at the end of the school year. AHS staff are to be commended for assisting with the check in process by evaluating various computer components then assessing a repair fee for damage.
Here is a synopsis of findings:
Incidents and cost of repairs
Missing feet $1,000
Broken charger $240
Broken keyboard $299
Broken display $3,592
Top case damage $0
Track pad $570
Bottom case $249
Broken hinge $4,041
Damage to any port $1,797
Power port damage $199
DVD drive $6,723
Liquid spill $1,550
Total Cost $20,260
Most students had purchased our $25 insurance and only had to pay the $25 per incident deductible. However, seven students did not purchase insurance and were put on payment plans.
Payment plans range from $125 to $1199. A total of 56 machines were sent off for repairs. Of the 27 damaged DVD drives, 18 were covered by warranty and 9 were found to have foreign objects jammed in them. These were not covered by warranty and cost $100 each for disassembly and repair. The broken hinges were from opening the laptop too far. Many of them were because students were using the machine in bed and rolled over on them after falling asleep. The laptop repair account is in the activity fund. The revenue from computer insurance sales was $18,864. Year to date expenses (mainly repairs) have been $21,245. We have not booked the expenses for year end, yet, so our out of pocket expenses to keep the student machines running will be $22,461. Total cost of program was $41,505, which translates to an annual cost of $85 per machine for upkeep. I will be looking to the CoOp fund and technology incentive monies to make up the difference.
The tech staff will be recommending requiring all students to purchase insurance and would like to try a private insurance provider. The private provider charges $89 per machine for $0 deductible.
At this time we should be replacing the student computers by giving incoming ninth graders a new machine. The cost for the upcoming school year would be over $125,000 and we don’t have the means to do it. Under existing conditions it is unclear how this program can be sustained.
Facilities
The PAC is continuing to be used throughout the summer and was used most recently for the State convention of the Nebraska Association of Art Clubs. They had a wonderful display of artwork and used about a dozen AHS classrooms to conduct workshops. On tap for June 28 is a performance by the Post Playhouse.
Grounds and Maintenance
Brigit and I took some time to work on the AMS marquee sign and have sent in for repair two motherboards. The AMS student council will be paying the repair bill which should be about $800.
