Chadron State is taking the practice field on Day Two of fall football camp Thursday. The running back position will be one of strength with junior Cody Paul and sophomore Derek Jackson expected to get a majority of the carries while fullback Robert Jackson will provide some bulk and be a solid option in short yardage situations and on the goal line.
The trio will be tasked with a more prominent role this year after the departure of senior Michael Madkins who rushed for 1,115 yards and 11 touchdowns last fall. Paul says he’s ready for the new challenge in part because of what he learned playing alongside Madkins and watching another super running back in Glen Clinton.
Paul comes back as the top returner in carries with 83 for 540 yards and four scores while Derek Jackson also saw his fair share of the workload with 65 rushes for 438 yards, finding the endzone five times last season.
Knowing how much Madkins and Clinton impacted his development Paul is planning to step up his leadership role to bring along the next group of talented Eagle rushers.
A pair of redshirt freshman tailbacks could be in the mix for carries as well. Chandler Sudbeck is a 5’11” 185-pounder out of South Dakota and Kevin Coy goes 6’0″ 230 from Davenport, Florida. Junior Jacob Robl from Bailey, Colorado has also been assigned number 28 for the upcoming year.
