Eagles Impressive at Highly Competitive South Dakota State Indoor Classic

Several Chadron State College track and field athletes placed at the highly-competitive South Dakota State Indoor Classic on Saturday.  More than 20 schools were entered and several of the events had more than 100 entries.

The Eagles’ leaders included freshman Isaac Grimes, who continued to excel by placing third in the triple jump at 47 feet, 8 inches and fifth in the long jump at 23-6 ¾.

The Eagles also continued to fare well in the weight throws. Cory Martens of Newton, Kan., was fourth in the men’s event with a heave of 61-2 ¾ while Ashlyn Hanson placed fourth and Ashton Hallsted was fifth in the women’s weight throw. Their marks were 59-11 and 59-1 ½.

On the track, sophomore Javan Lanier was fourth among the 103 contestants in the 60-meter dash in 6.91 seconds.

Both Chadron State 4×400-meter relay teams placed eighth with season-best marks.  The men’s time was 3:18.92 and the women’s was 3:56.24. There were 30 teams in both races.

Several individual Chadron State runners had career-best times.  Among them were Cassie Johnson, who ran the 400-meter dash in 58.95 seconds; Alyse Henry, who ran the mile in 5:09.30 to finish 15th among 111 entries; and Whitney Riesen, who completed the 5000 in 18:15.94 and was 21st among 53 contestants.

Chadron State men who ran the best races of their careers indoors included Levi Avila (4:20.74) and Hunter Kratz (4:32.29) in the mile and Riley Howard (15:16.40), Phil Duncan (15:19.48) and Eric Yager (15:20.46) in the 5000.

Avila was 19th among 127 entries in the mile and Howard was 12th, Duncan 15th and Yager 16th among the 61 men who ran the 5000.
