The RMAC is losing a school next year. The conference says Western New Mexico University is joining the Lone Star Conference as a full member in the fall of 2016.
The Mustangs have been a RMAC member after leaving the PacWest in 2005 and a short stint in the Heartland from 2006-2007.
Shortening travel is a driving factor behind the change.
“The move from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to the Lone Star Conference allows our student-athletes to continue having a great athletic experience, while traveling less,” said Dr. Joseph Shepard, WNMU President. “The Lone Star Conference has an outstanding history of sportsmanship and competitive play at the Division II national level.”
“The RMAC is sorry to see Western New Mexico depart,” said incoming RMAC President’s Council Executive Committee chair Dr. Dene Thomas. “They have been a good member institution, and they will be missed. We wish them well.”
“Western New Mexico University has been an outstanding member of the RMAC,” added recent Executive Committee chair Dr. Stephen Jordan. “We wish them the very best in their new relationship with the Lone Star Conference.”
On a local note, Chadron State football will play the Mustangs in Silver City on November 7 this season.
