EAGLE TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS COMPETE IN CALIFORINA

CSC track - hurdles
The Chadron State College men’s 4×400 relay team won that event Friday night at the gigantic Bryan Clay Invitational Track and Field Meet hosted by Azusa Pacific University in the Los Angeles area and the women took six seconds off the CSC record while placing fourth in the 4×400 relay at the same meet.

The Eagles’ men were timed in 3 minutes, 15.26 seconds while winning the relay, which drew 14 entries. The CSC runners were Lane Higgins, Jazz Bozner, Zerek Jones and Martin Moriel. They edged Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rival Colorado Mines by 5 one-hundredths of a second for the top spot. Seattle University was third.

During the individual 400 race, Jones was sixth and Moriel was eighth among the 57 entries. Jones was timed in 48.33 and Moriel in 48.41.

The Chadron State women’s 1600-meter relay team comprised of Rochelle Nelson, Shelby Guy, Tiffany Thomas and Shelby Bozner finished that race in 3:49.59 seconds, their best time of the season by about six seconds and a school record.

The Bryan Clay Meet is one of the largest in the world. Many of the events had more than 100 entries.

CSC head coach Brad Gamble said he was really pleased with both relay teams as well as many of the Eagles’ individual performances.

“This was definitely the best we’ve performed in the four years we’ve gone to California,” Gamble said. “We had numerous really good marks against elite competition. I think we’re going to be ready to do more good things at the conference meet.”

The RMAC Championships will be May 1-3 at Pueblo, Colo.

Among those placing high in the rugged competition at the Clay Invitational was CSC sophomore Chris Cutcher. He finished third among 28 entries in the 110 high hurdles in 14.49 seconds.

The Eagles’ Tessa Gorsuch was 11th among 71 entries in the women’s 100 high hurdles in 14.22 seconds. The previous day she was third in the same event at the Cal State-LA Meet in 14.18 seconds, her career best and the second fastest time in CSC annals.

Another CSC hurdler, Shelby Bozner, was ninth among 64 contestants in the 400 hurdles at the Clay Meet in 1:02.57.

Freshman Damarcus Simpson placed 10th in both the long jump and the triple jump at different meets on Friday.

He managed just one measureable mark in the long jump at the Mt. SAC Relays at Walnut, Calif., but his mark of 24-1.5 is the third best by a Chadron State male. He hit 47-2.5 in the triple jump at the Bryan Clay Invitational. There were 36 contestants in the latter event.

CSC’s Stachia Reuwsaat also competed at the Mt. SAC Relays and placed eighth in the women’s long jump at 19-8.25. Earlier this season, Reuwsaat broke her own CSC long jump record by going 19-9.

For the second straight year in California, senior Jayme Nunes of Alliance entered the 10,000-meter run at the Long Beach State Meet. She broke the school record a year ago with a time of 37:52.15. This year she improved on that time by 25 seconds.

Another CSC distance runner, Nicky Banzhaf of Chadron, ran the 5000 at the Bryan Clay Meet in 17:57.44, some 13 seconds faster than the old school record that was set by Stacy Girard in 2008

Also, Dylan Stansbury of Crawford had the third fastest time by a CSC runner, 15:24.14, in the men’s 5000 at the Clay Meet.
