17-year old Dylan Cardeilhac, the Torrington teenager convicted of killing Scotts Bluff County Corrections officer Amanda Baker in an attack inside the County Detention Center just over a year ago, will be sentenced today.
Cardeilhac was convicted by a Scotts Bluff County District Court jury in November of 2nd-degree murder in the death of the 24-year old Baker, a single mother who was also attending college.
The maximum sentence for 2nd degree murder in Nebraska is life without parole, but a juvenile Cardilhac would be eligible for parole after serving 40 years.
The teen did not deny luring Baker into his cell, then choking her in what proved to be an unsuccessful attempt to escape, but insisted he didn’t intend to kill her, just knock her out.
Baker was pronounced brain-dead following the attack early last Valentine’s Day and died after being taken off life-support two days later following the donation of organs for transplants.
