A Celebration of Life service for Ozzie Ostrander, will be Monday, December 3, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the United Methodist Church in Chadron. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Chadron.
Harold E. (Ozzie) Ostrander of Chadron died on Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, at Crestview Care Center in Chadron. He was 83.
He was born Feb. 14, 1929 in Bedford, Iowa, to Glen and Vera Ostrander.
At the age of two, he and his parents moved to Chadron and later to Oelrichs. He graduated from Chadron High School in 1947. He was an outstanding athlete. He was the quarterback on the football team and was the leading scorer on the basketball teams that had records of 22-5 when he was a junior and 22-3 when he was a senior.
He married his high school classmate, Darleen Soper, on June 20, 1948. She preceded him in death on May 25, 2001. He also was preceded in death by his son Gregg in 1988 and his parents.
Ostrander worked as a butcher for a few years in Chadron and then sold Waddell and Reed Mutual Funds. He later worked about 10 years for the State of Nebraska Tax Department. In the early 1980s, the Ostranders purchased a Taco John’s in Garden City, Kan. When they retired in the mid- 1990s, they moved back to Chadron.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Chadron Rotary Club, the Masonic Lodge and was a volunteer for several community organizations.
He is survived by a daughter-in-law, Bev, and her husband Howard Myers of Overbrook, Kan., two grandchildren, six great grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
