CYBER CORNER FOR FRIDAY, JULY 11

police-lights-red1IN THE NEWS: VA. POLICE WON’T SEEK NUDE PIX OF SEXTING SUSPECT

McLEAN, Va. (AP) — It had a certain “eewww” factor to it — and now police in Manassas, Virginia have decided against it. They won’t go forward with plans to take sexually explicit photos of a 17-year-old to prove a sexting case against him. The plan by police and prosecutors to take pictures of the teen in an aroused state had produced a wave of criticism. Police had said they wanted the pictures to compare to photos he’s accused of sending to his 15-year-old girlfriend at the time. But now they’re backing away from that approach — and will let a search warrant authorizing the photos expire.

IN THE NEWS: VERIZON ADDING WIRELESS CUSTOMERS

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation’s largest wireless category says it’s getting stronger. Verizon says it added more than 1.4 million long-term wireless subscribers in the second quarter of this season. The report comes in advance of the firm’s second-quarter earnings report, which is due July 22. Verizon says the gains in the April-to-June period came in both smartphones and tablets.

ON THE WEB: FTC CHALLENGES AMAZON OVER IN-APP PURCHASES

CYBERSPACE (AP) — The Federal Trade Commission has already gotten Apple to pony up. Now it’s going after Amazon over in-app purchases made by children. The FTC says it will sue Amazon over charges that the online retailer hasn’t done enough to keep kids from running up millions of dollars in unauthorized in-app purchases. Amazon had said it wouldn’t settle the case — because it had already refunded money to parents who complained about the in-app charges. The FTC settled with Apple over a similar matter for $32.5 million in January.

IN STORES: GARTH BROOKS SELLING MUSIC ON HIS OWN SITE

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — It’s his music — and now Garth Brooks will be making digital versions of it available on his own Web site. Brooks, one of the last remaining holdouts against Apple’s iTunes, is continuing his struggle against the Apple music-buying portal. Brooks will soon make digital versions of his songs available to fans through his own Web site — the site gives you the exact countdown for those who care. Brooks has been one of the top-selling music stars. He has said he has no animosity toward Apple — but doesn’t care for how it goes about selling music on its site.
