IN THE NEWS: POTATO SALAD CROWDFUNDING
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — What started out as a joke may turn out to be a huge potato salad party for an Ohio man. Zack “Danger” Brown of Columbus set out to raise $10 to pay for his first attempt to make potato salad. But his efforts ended up raising more than $37,000 from a crowd-funding Internet site. Brown says less than a week into the campaign, he has gotten offerings from more than 3,400 backers worldwide. Brown says he went public with his effort to fund his first foray into potato-salad making for the “pure enjoyment and silliness of life.” Now flush with funds, he says he plans to throw a huge public potato-salad party with the money.
IN THE NEWS: RUSSIAN HACKER FACES CHARGES
SEATTLE (AP) — A Russian man is facing charges in a hacking attack that hit a number of businesses in western Washington state. Roman Valerevich Seleznev is being ordered held until a hearing next month after being charged in an indictment with bank fraud, obtaining information from a protected computer, possessing stolen credit cards and identity theft. Authorities say the suspect hacked into computers at restaurants, hundreds of other retail businesses — and even the Phoenix Zoo. He was arrested by the U.S. Secret Service on Guam early Sunday.
ON THE WEB: BANGOR, MAINE POLICE DEPARTMENT
CYBERSPACE (AP) — Add Bangor, Maine to the list of police departments burnishing their public images by posting images and stories on Facebook. The 80-officer department has attracted more than 20,000 “likes” on its Facebook page — in part because of humorous pictures of a stuffed duck. The “Duck of Justice,” as it’s become known has shown up in photos of police cars, department members and K-9 officers.
IN STORES: OLLOCLIP 4-IN-1 PHOTO LENS FOR iPAD
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California (AP) — If you have an Apple iPad, you know it comes with a camera. Now with the addition of an easy-to-use lens, you can increase that number from one to five.
The Olloclip 4-In-1 Photo Lens for the iPad adds four dimensions of variety to the standard lens on the device. You can switch between fisheye, wide-angle, and two macro modes. One macro mode is 10x and the other 15x — to help you get up close ups on everything from flowers to postage stamps.
The lens clips on and off the device in seconds — provided you free it from any case that you have to protect the tablet. The optics are rock solid — and the lens is small enough to easily be tucked into a pocket or bag so your camera — or cameras, if you will — will be ready when you need them.
