RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Jury selection continues today in Rapid City in the trial of a Hot Springs man charged with killing his mother three years ago.
28-year-old Matthew Tornquist has pleaded not guilty to alternate charges of 1st-degree and 2-degree murder as well as grand theft charges in the death of 56-year old Catherine Tornquist, who disappeared in early October 2011 and whose body has not been found.
Prosecutors say Tornquist killed his mother for thousands of dollars of money she’d taken out of the bank to buy a camper.
His trial was moved from Hot Springs to Rapid City because of the extensive local publicity over the case. Testimony is expected to last a couple of weeks.
Prosecutors chose not to seek the death penalty, so Tornquist will face a mandatory sentence of life in prison without parole if he’s convicted of either 1st-degree or 2nd-degree murder.
