County Committee Election Information Meeting

The Dawes/N. Sioux County will be hosting a County Committee (COC) information meeting at the county office (1020 W 6th St – Chadron) July 25th, at 2:00 pm.  Everyone is welcome.

 

CRP Emergency Haying and Grazing

Fifty-four counties, including Dawes County and Sioux County are authorized for emergency haying and grazing of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for 2013 due to drought conditions. Emergency haying and grazing for 2013 began July 16, 2013.  Producers will be assessed a payment reduction based on the number of acres actually hayed or grazed times the CRP annual rental payment times 25%.

Interested producers must request prior approval and obtain a modified conservation plan from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS).  Producers must leave at least 25 percent of each field or contiguous CRP fields ungrazed for wildlife, or graze not more than 75 percent of the stocking rate determined by NRCS.

Emergency Haying/Grazing provisions do NOT allow producers who do NOT own or lease livestock, to sell the harvested hay, however the grazing privilege by be leased to an eligible livestock producer.  The lease value shall NOT exceed the the value of the annual rental rate reduction.  CRP participants who rent or lease the grazing privilege to an eligible livestock producer must inform the County Office of the producer’s name and identify the acreage to be grazed on an aerial photocopy.

The deadlines are: Haying-August 31; Grazing-September 30.

CRP Managed Haying and Grazing

Managed haying and grazing of CRP is also available.  Managed harvesting, is authorized no more frequently than1 out of every 3 – 5 years, depending on the age of the contract, after the cover is fully established.  Producers will be assessed a payment reduction based on the number of acres actually hayed or grazed times the CRP annual rental payment times 25%.  Participants must report the number of acres actually hayed or grazed to the County office by October 1 of each year.

Producers interesting in Managed Haying or Grazing must obtain a modified conservation plan to include harvesting requirements, as determined by NRCS (the harvesting plan must be site specific and reflect the local wildlife needs and concerns.)  Managed haying/grazing is limited to 1 cutting, and producers shall not hay and graze the same acreage.

Managed Haying/Grazing provisions allow producers who do not own or lease livestock, may harvest hay for sale to an eligible livestock producer or lease the grazing privilege to an eligible livestock producer.  CRP participants who rent or lease the grazing privilege to an eligible livestock producer must inform the County Office of the producer’s name and identify the acreage to be grazed on an aerial photocopy.

Reporting NAP Crop Losses

Participants in Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) must file a timely notice of loss. To be eligible, notify your local county FSA Office of any crop loss or damage: within 15 days of the event; the loss became apparent; FSA normal harvest date; or final planting date for prevented planting acres. Acres destroyed prior to harvest must be inspected prior to destruction to remain eligible for NAP assistance.
