FUGITIVE HOSPITAL CEO BACK IN U-S

Paul Cardwell - 1The Wyoming hospital CEO who arrested in Thailand after fleeing embezzlement charges in Wyoming and Indiana last summer is back in the U-S.

Paul Cardwell arrived back in the states Wednesday in the custody of FBI agents. He’d been arrested earlier this month on June 7.

Cardwell is accused of nearly $1.7-million dollars in identical recruiting scams at two hospitals he ran, White County Memorial Hospital in Monticello, Ind., and later Powell Valley Healthcare in Powell, Wyoming. Each hospital reports about $850,000 in losses.

Prosecutors allege Cardwell and Michael Plake of West Lafayette, Ind., set up a phony recruiting firm, with Cardwell having his hospitals pay Plake for recruiting services and the two men then splitting the money.

Plake pleaded guilty to federal charges and Plake is serving a 30-month prison sentence. Cardwell fled the U-S last August, just before he was expected to accept a plea deal.
