The 14th-ranked Nebraska softball team clinched the #2 seed for this week’s Big Ten Tournament yesterday when they beat Penn State 2-0 on the road in the regular season finale behind a 1-hitter from junior Tatum Edwards.

The win, Nebraska’s school-record 15th road victory of the season, puts the Huskers at 39-12 overall and 16-6 in Big Ten play. Penn State fell to 16-32 overall and 5-17 in league play

Edwards was dominating in throwing her 9th shutout of the year and improving to 25-8 on the season. She allowed just a 2-out 6th-inning single and a pair of walks, while striking out 6.

Her twin sister, Taylor Edwards, gave her all the offense she would need with a 2-out solo home run…her 12th of the year…in the top of the 1st, the third straight game in which the Huskers scored in the top of the 1st.

Their other run came in the 3rd when sophomore Jordan Bettiol got a one-out infield single, stole 2nd, and came in on a clutch 2-out, RBI single from senior Gabby Banda. Bettiol went 2-2 and was hit by a pitch in 3 plate appearances.

Penn State got its first baserunner in the 6th when Edwards issued a one-out walk, then gave up her lone hit to put runners on the corners with 2 out. A line drive to right looked like it might score a run, but sophomore 1st baseman Mattie Fowler reached out and snagged it to end the inning and the only threat by the Nittany Lions.

Nebraska now turns its attention to the Big Ten Tournament, which it is hosting. The tournament begins Thursday at Bowlin Stadium, with the Huskers opening play at 7 p.m. Friday against the winner of Thursday’s game between Purdue and Michigan State.
