CRP Managed Grazing
Managed grazing is authorized on Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres from April 1 – April 30.
Spring grazing is authorized for select CRP practices only and producers MUST obtain a modified conservation plan from the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and complete the applicable FSA forms prior to grazing.
Managed grazing provisions are NOT drought related. Participants that hayed/grazed CRP acres under Emergency (drought) provision in 2012 will likely not qualify to complete spring grazing practices.
Producers agree to:
- re-establish, at their own expense, any cover destroyed or damaged as a result of grazing practices, regardless of recommendations or determinations made by NRCS
- not manage hay and routine graze the same acreage.
The CRP annual rental payment, will be reduced by the number of acres actually grazed, times 25 percent of the CRP annual acre payment rate.
The CRP contract is subject to termination or other penalties as may be authorized by the CRP contract and regulations should there be any violation of this haying authority of CRP acreage.
If the payment reduction has not been paid in advance, all signatories on the CRP-1 shall sign these conditions before grazing begins.
USDA Announces 45th General Sign-Up for the Conservation Reserve Program
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will conduct a four-week general sign-up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), beginning May 20 and ending on June 14. CRP has a 27-year legacy of protecting the nation’s natural resources through voluntary participation, while providing significant economic and environmental benefits to rural communities across the United States.
Currently, about 27 million acres are enrolled in CRP. Producers that are accepted in the sign-up can receive cost-share assistance to plant long-term, resource-conserving covers and receive an annual rental payment for the length of the contract (10-15 years).
Contracts on 3.3 million acres of CRP are set to expire on Sept. 30, 2013. Producers with expiring contracts or producers with environmentally sensitive land are encouraged to evaluate their options under CRP.
Additional sign-ups for continuous CRP programs such as Highly Erodible Land Initiative and Initiative to Restore Grasslands, Wetlands and Wildlife will be announced in spring 2013.
