The state’s first tornado of the year hit in a rural area of western Nebraska on Friday evening, but officials do not believe the twister hit any buildings or caused any injuries.
Meteorologist Cory Martin of the National Weather Service in North Platte says the twister was “relatively early” in the tornado season, but not unusually so.
The tornado was spotted about 3 miles west of Sutherland, then moved east toward Hershey, but Martin says officials haven’t been able to determine how long the tornado stayed on the ground and whether it was a continuous track or if it went up and touched down again.
The tornado was accompanied by a severe thunderstorm that dropped heavy rain…up to .28″ in some places…and hail reported up to 1″ in diameter. Martin calls the rain “a step in the right direction” but nowhere near enough to help much with drought conditions.
