LAS VEGAS, N.M. – The Chadron State softball team repeated its Friday performance on Saturday, beating Black Hills State and losing to New Mexico Highlands in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference pod series in Las Vegas, NM.
In the pod format, each team played the other two once each day. In Saturday’s action, the Eagles beat BHSU 8-3 and lost to NMHU 7-3 while NMHU beat BHSU in the other game 7-2, thanks to a 6-run 5th inning.
While CSC beat the Yellowjackets by 5 runs, they had to come from behind to do it. They trailed 2-0 after the 3rd inning and didn’t score until the 6th, then had back-to-back 4-run innings to grab an 8-2 lead before giving up a run in the bottom of the 7th.
Shea Graham led the way for Eagles, finishing with 2 hits and 2 RBIs while Katie Londo also had 2 hits in support of pitcher Kylee Polsely, who struck out 6.
Polsley also started the game against NMHU, but lasted just 2-2/3 innings in taking the loss and giving up 5 earned runs. Breeze Phillips gave up the last 2 innings.
The game was reminiscent of the Eagles loss to the Cowgirls on Friday as they had 11 hits, but left 8 runners on base.
They gave up 2 runs in the bottom of the 2nd Saturday on a solo homer and an rbi single, but got one of those back an inning later when Amanda Einspahr tripled and came home on an rbi single by Nikki Ritzen.
NMHU pushed the margin to 5-1 with 3 runs in the bottom of the 3rd with a sacrifice fly and a 2-run double, then added 2 more in the 6th on a double and a single.
The Eagles mounted a rally in the 7th and scored 2 runs on an rbi double by Caity Pelayo, but the game ended 2 batters later when Katie Londo was thrown out on the back end of a double steal attempt.
With the weekend results, CSC strengthened its hold on 8th place in the RMAC with an 8-10 league mark and 10-15 record overall. The Eagles are 2 games behind #7 Western New Mexico and 3 games in front of NMHU with Metro State 3-1/2 back.
