LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Republican Sen. Ben Sasse has told University of Nebraska-Lincoln students that he blames technology eroding the way people connect for the country’s divisiveness.

More than 600 students sat in on the discussion Monday with the senator who is among President Donald Trump’s most vocal critics.

Sasse said technology has undermined traditional community structures, and ideology or “political tribes” are rushing to fill the void. Sasse, who has considered leaving the GOP, said political parties aren’t adequate replacements for communities.

Sasse recommended that students engage in meaningful ways away from their screens.

But many student panelists said the solution is more complex than unplugging from technology.

Junior student Grace Chambers says technology and social media shouldn’t be avoided, but rather used as a tool to educate and engage students.
